Meet Chris Caporuscio | Owner, DJ, Sound Engineer, Teacher & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Caporuscio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
You hear the phrase “What does a DJ actually do.” Everyone has a different prospective of what a DJ actually does. Let’s start from the DJ’s view point. As a veteran DJ (and I don’t mean that as an aged person) I have learned that the devil is in the details. I ask so many questions from my clients. I do this because I want to create the exact vision my clients have in mind without them having worry if it can or cannot be achieved. As a DJ I will spend about 16 hours or more building a custom playlist of music based off of our clients wishes, likes, and dislikes in music. We then compose the music in chronological order. There are many factors involved with this task. The music must be aligned in order based off the matching key, pitch, energy level, vocal intros, or vocal outros, beat sync, and instrument sync. This is a crucial step. Why? Composing music is like telling a story, only the narrator is the DJ, and the music is the story line. After composing the music in order the task is for the DJ to practice this set so that the DJ can hear the “story” that they created. If any part of the “story” does not flow, than WE as the DJ will go back and shift some music around so that the DJ set or “story” flows perfectly for the guests to dance to. This is only the beginning of what DJ’s DO. If WE are specifically working on a wedding type of event we must also compose the ceremony, formalities, timeline of event, create timed light to sound synchronization, grand entrance music, and compose the 3 primary dances just after the grand entrance. All of this work DJ’s DO behind the scenes. WE work had prior to the event, or wedding day gathering detailed information, names, timeframes, music, and more. WE coordinate with photographers to synchronize special moment shots while dancing. WE coordinate with planners so that WE can make announcements, and execute formalities on a limited timeframe. WE coordinate with videographers, so that they can record audio, speeches, and music directly from the DJ’s Sound Mixer. There is so much that DJ’s actually do. Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career as a DJ & music producer started in 1996. I was a resident DJ on multiple radio stations starting in early 1999. I was the resident DJ on Orbital Grooves Radio, Gremlin Radio, and NSB Radio, Boost FM. Communication and positive vibes are my main focus. I still collect vinyl records, and digital audio because my crate of music is never full. My music collection is infinite as songs are produced daily. I think taking calculated risks set me apart from other companies? I like to invent things that can simplify the matter, or improve upon what it is today. I believe my time in the merchant marines programmed me to be a better listener, observer, and a leader. There are some things I have witnessed while working for other companies that drove me crazy, more less because I didn’t have the power to fix it. We were also talked down on, and were never given a chance to express are creativity. This was one thing I wanted to change in my company.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t really have great spots to visit. I recently moved to Charleston about a year ago. I am still figuring this part out at the moment.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The start of my current path was not paved by a single person. There are many people who I would like to thank for my success. Let’s start with my creators. My mother and my father. Growing up I was very music inclined, and wanted to be a DJ. “Oh, NO you can’t do that son” my parents tell me ” You need to stop trying to be a rockstar, and go to college so you can move out and start your own life.” Well i did that. I went to college, got the degree, and worked in the field. However, I was pulled back into the scene by a cosmic vibration I just couldn’t comprehend. I believe the idea that when someone tells you NO, your human instinct is to prove them wrong, right? Here we are 2023, and I have done just that. My parents couldn’t be more proud of me. They aren’t proud of me because I proved them wrong. They are proud of me because I succeeded. I also want to thank all of my mistakes, failures, and bad business acquaintances that showed me everything I did not want. These collections of negative energy allowed me to succeed even more. They showed me what not to do. They showed me how not conduct business, They showed me how not to treat my co-workers, friends, clients, and contractors, All of these bad characters are still helping me succeed to this day.
