We had the good fortune of connecting with SlideRide Funk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SlideRide, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
When you’re looking at business especially your own, it’s literally a certain type of mindset. What you think about 24/7 or even majority of the time is VERY IMPORTANT. I believe in the art of “Law of Attraction”, what you put your energy in is what you’ll get out of life. Being Gullah and raised in Charleston, South Carolina helped me understand that growing up.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was interviewed last time, I stated how I was most proud of the fact that I took time to step away from the crowd & step into a genre that not too many know about. Trap Jazz. Playing my trombone over rap beats. It started with the trombone, I necessarily wasn’t planning rapping on these beats. But, the better beats I got overtime, the more confidence I had rap over them. I’ll give credit for my expertise to the following band directors: Mr.Linard McCloud, My father Mr.Keven Shepherd, Michael Robinson, Mr. Derrick Jackson, & Mr.Johnson (Band Director for Benedict College) Don P. Roberts (Founder of DrumLine Live). The beats would literally touch my soul while I play them on repeat every night. Like mentioned previously, it’s all a mindset. If you think it’s hard, it’s going to get harder. If it’s easy, it’ll get easier. So for me, the road had its speed bumps and potholes, but they’re some spots on the road that’s smooth and adjustable. 1 lesson I learned, everyone is not your friend, everyone isn’t happy for you. Keep your blueprint ideas to YOURSELF. People can’t stop what they can’t see coming. 1 thing I want the world to know is that I did it my way, and that’s what makes me happy inside.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well In Charleston, I’ll take my friend to king St if he/ she were to ever visit. There’s this Korean restaurant right across from 5 Guys and it’s delicious. When I was in high school, she’d let me play my trombone in front of her shop while other store owners threatened to call police on me. Shout out to Mama Kim’s Korean restaurant located on King st close to Marion Square.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a Big shoutout to Jonise Pierre Aka Mojo Muziq, She’s my producer and close friend. When I first move to Tallahassee in 2021 I literally had little to no motion. She brought me into her Latin band & ever since then, my life blew up for the better in Florida. I would also love to give a big shoutout to the Following Producers who sent me beats when I first started my music career:

Ace Rouse
Ogyunggod
IgilanoDean
Dee Macko
GYSG
Morb!d
Jay Vilpin aka FloridaManJay
Loco Ny

Without the help of these artists, I’d have no beats to rap or play over, I’m truly grateful to have artists willing to collaborate with me.
