We had the good fortune of connecting with Precious Biggom, Ph,D., RN and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Precious, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting my own business specifically a nursing business was a decision born out of a blend of passion, experience, and the desire to make a tangible difference in nursing and nursing education.
During my time as a Nursing Professor, I identified a gap in nursing education for students with a diverse background. Often times they were first-generation students and sometimes struggled with progressing through the nursing program. This realization ignited a desire within me to create a service that could bridge this gap by offering individualized tutoring, study guides, ebooks, online courses, CPR/First Aid training, and mentoring.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
By trade I am a Registered Nurse of 14 years and in healthcare since 2006 when I started as a nursing assistant. I’ve worked in many of the major healthcare systems in Columbia. After a few years spent at the bedside, I desired something different. I knew that I enjoyed precepting the new graduate nurses, so I received my masters and doctorate in Nursing Education. It was a tough journey attending graduate school full-time as well as working 2-3 jobs simultaneously. I knew teaching was where I was needed so I always kept my eyes on the end goal regardless of the long nights. I became a full-time educator in 2014. I’ve had the pleasure of educating high school and college students.
I’ve accomplished some great milestones during my professional journey such as The State Newspaper Top 20 under 40 (2022), MUSC Excellence in Diversity (2021), and becoming nationally certified as a Nurse Educator (2020).
I believe my business and story resonate with my clients because I too was that first-generation college student that had to navigate college and the professional world of nursing without guidance from someone that could relate. I want the world to know about me and my story through one of my favorite sayings “nothing beats a failure but a try”. This saying has kept me motivated to keep giving it my all when I didn’t think I had the strength to.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestfriend was visiting we would enjoy brunch at Ruby Sunshine and the Robinson Room. Lunch time we would eat at Backstreets Grill, grab take-out from the Toasty Hot Spot, and KPOT Korean Bbq. Grab dinner at some of my favorite places like Blue Marlin, Bone-Appetite, Colas, and Miyabi Japanese . For a more upscale dinner we would enjoy food and drinks at Smoked. We could hang out at The Grand on Main for some light fun. On Saturday morning, we would take some time at Soda City Market to enjoy the various food and fresh veggies and fruits. For Saturday night we could enjoy drinks and music at Room Service.
Downtown has some great options for meeting new people and trying different foods.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without God and His guidance in showing me my purpose in life. I am grateful for the unwavering support and encouragement from my husband Eric, as well as the valuable marketing and digital skills, and the selfless assistance from my sister, Portia. I also would like to recognize the students who inspired me to pursue my purpose on a full-time basis even before I considered turning it into a business.
