We had the good fortune of connecting with Meaghan Dunham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meaghan, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
In December of 2022, I was hospitalized twice on Christmas Eve for health complications due to long COVID. Due to this experience, and the ensuing slew of tests, therapies and treatments; I made the difficult decision to take a big step back in my business in 2023. I had to let go of some really fantastic consulting clients and stop focusing on growth in order to stabilize my health. I took a huge financial hit and it felt like a big set back in a lot of ways, but ultimately, I now feel like I have a much better grasp on my health and have stepped into 2024 feeling healthy and excited for what’s to come!
What should our readers know about your business?
I love owning my own business because it allows me to infuse every choice I make with my values and ethics. One thing I am passionate about — that sets me apart from a lot of other business coaches — is the infusion of energetic modalities like Astrology, Yoga Philosophy and Ayurveda into my work. I help my clients not just tackle marketing, sales and business development challenges; but also understand how to live a more well-balanced and holistic life outside of their business.
I initially started my business when my grandparents passed away, in 2020 and 2021 respectively, as a way to honor their memory. Their legacy gives me the courage to bravely go after my dreams — one of which was always to own my own business.
Over the last 4 years of running a business, a lot of things have been difficult. Dealing with family matters like the deaths of my grandparents, managing my own health complications, getting engaged, planning for future children — and on top of all of that, growing a business? Some days it feels almost impossible. But then, I remember that it’s a gift to be able to choose how I spend my energy each day; something I could not have done in my previous life in the 9-5 world.
I want the world to know that entrepreneurs work really hard to bring their dreams to life from thin air. The dedication and persistence it takes to continue to opt-in, regardless of how things are going, can be really hard for people to manage. That’s why I love teaching other entrepreneurs about energetics; because I find that incorporating these modalities into my own life has helped me be a better, more compassionate, business owner.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The thing I love about the Charlotte Metro area is that there are so many different places to visit!
I currently live in East Charlotte and love the wide variety of global food choices here. My favorite restaurants are within walking distance for me, which is really nice. I’d definitely take my bestie for breakfast to Deli Street, lunch at Tacos El Nevado and dinner at Goodwurst.
The next day, we’d hop in the car and visit Smelly Cat for coffee, then stroll the main strip of NoDa to shop at Pura Vida Worldly Art and Curio, Craft and Conjure. She loves cats, so obviously we’d have to stop at Mac Tabby Cat Cafe! Then, we’d swing by Lang Van for dinner.
I’d also take her to downtown Waxhaw for lunch at Provisions and an afternoon shopping all the antique stores on the main street.
If we had time, we’d venture down to Fort Mill (where I used to work!) and visit Amor Artis, Improper Pig and Moxie Mercantile’s newest location.
Finally, on Saturday, I’d take her to the Charlotte Regional Farmer’s Market to pick up some local meat and produce… and a beautiful bouquet of flowers to bring home!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are lots of people who have supported me to get where I am today. My Dad is a small business owner, so without his example, I’m not sure I would have been here. The support of my family has always helped me feel confident to go after my dreams. I also have a lot of very close friends who are entrepreneurs and small business owners, which makes the process feel so much less lonely! I’ve been a member of a women’s entrepreneurship group, the Create Your Purpose Collective, for almost 5 years and this group, alone, has done more for my entrepreneurial journey than just about anything else. Finally, my fiancé is a freelance filmmaker and video editor and his support — especially over the last year as I’ve been rehabilitating my health — has been the greatest gift to me.
