We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Alanah and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My belief about risk is that it’s necessary for an adventurous and exciting life. Risk has played a huge part in my life and career. I’ve taken risks to start businesses, to invest in my education, and to have new experiences in my life. My most recent risk in life was in July 2023 when I sold everything, moved away from a city I had lived in for eight years, and took off on a nomadic adventure to live in different places across the United States for a few months.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has included a lot of evolvement and change because it took me a while to find the perfect fit for me. I’ve worked in a range of industries from creative to health to hospitality to customer service. Upon completing college, I kept studying things that interested me from yoga to massage therapy to life coaching, and I pursued certifications in those various skills. Today, I’m a life coach for overwhelmed millennial women and a Director of Customer Support for a life coaching company.

It wasn’t easy to keep changing directions because I had a story about how I couldn’t figure things out, didn’t know what I wanted, and was different from other people. What helped me was understanding that the way to know what’s for me is to keep trying the next thing. When I landed on coaching, it felt right and I found myself feeling very fulfilled.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I recently moved away from Greenville after eight years of living there, but I haven’t forgotten all of the best spots. If the weather is nice, I’d recommend renting a bike at a shop downtown and biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail to Tandem Creperie and Coffeehouse. Once you’ve finished a delicious chicken and mushroom crepe and a honey lavender latte (my favorites), you should swing by a few local shops before biking back to downtown. I recommend The Good Market Co and Sunrift Adventures. Another great spot for food is The Commons. There you’ll find Automatic Taco, GB&D, Community Tap, and Methodical Coffee. I highly recommend the pork belly taco at Automatic Taco. Another favorite area of town is the Village of West Greenville. There you’ll find The Village Grind, an adorable coffee shop, Bar Margaret, where I think the best burger in Greenville can be enjoyed, as well as my favorite sustainable store, Amend Market. A staple of Greenville for local groceries and goods is Swamp Rabbit Grocery. Don’t forget to head to the farmers markets on Saturdays in Greenville and Travelers Rest. Lastly, if you’re into hiking, you should check out the trails at Paris Mountain.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have such an incredible group of friends and a family that has let me follow my next desire, which has shaped me into who I am today. They know that if I set my mind to something, I’ll make it happen. They’ve watched me fail and figure things out as I go, and they’ve encouraged me that I’ll eventually get to my goal, and I always have. It’s such a blessing to have people in your corner.
