We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Brown Surf coach & Tao Tantric Arts teacher and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny Brown, how do you think about risk?
uhhh I like this one. Just picking this question felt like a risk. I believe taking risk is the only way you find growth. The fear of the unknown, the vulnerability and the courage one must muster to take the leap is a lesson in itself. It’s all really personal in the end so for me to take a risk and land it, whether it works or not I feel stronger and more aligned with my life purpose. I am a goal setter and I love to liberate my energy! The idea of not going for it is sadder for me than failing really, cause you don’t fail when you try. Its like watching a wave go by and not catching it, what a bummer feeling to WISH you have gone for it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our family owned business is a fine balance between work and play. The art of surfing and living our life revolved around the tides, swells, and life’s expectations is how we honor our family relations. It was not an easy road to get to 20 years of Shaka Surf. We had many first years of small camps and little to no equipment. We got here by a strong ambitious nature and a vision. Now we battle the elements, tropical storms, hovering parents and yet the beauty of the ocean and the gift of a stoked young surfer makes it all worth it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take my friend to a sunrise on Folly Beach, maybe with some coffee or Maté. EPIC. We’d definitely go surf. Then hit Dead Low coffee or Lost Dog Cafe for a bite to eat. During the week we would visit Downtown Charleston and see what fun art exhibits are happening. A boat ride/fishing trip is a must when someone comes to visit…probably including a stop on Morris Island. We’d have backyard fire pit nights with the weather cooling off and revisit old memories. Dinner nights could include Jack of Cups or Alfredos’s on Folly for good eats.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, friends over the years, near and far , close friends and new ones are what keep Shaka Surf afloat. The continued support and encouragement of a pat on the back on a hard day or a compliment from a stranger keep me motivated to do my best and be a better person each day. I am eternally grateful for each person I have meet, every first wave smile and each young surfer I have had the privilege of watching shred!
I have to say our business is so family owned and operated its comical sometimes how we read each others minds and lend a hand. Some days are hard, no joke, but the rewards of surfing together at sunset or dawn patrol are like little miracles and glimpses into the life I have dreamed of having.
