We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamahl St. Clair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamahl, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Great question. I wanted to start my own business to pursue freedom of expression and financial freedom as well. Having a traditional 9-5 definitely does have it’s benefits, however it can be a restrictive. There are set hours, there are rules, there a ceilings. I believe that in starting your own business you get to break all of those.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Absolutely. So I am an artist, songwriter, and producer. I love to make R&B and Hip-Hop. Not rap, but Hip-Hop. There is a difference. What sets my art apart is that my music is focused and rooted in love and truth. It’s focused on unifying people and letting people know that is okay to love yourself and each other. It promotes authenticity and vulnerability.

I’m most excited about getting better at the craft and developing as an artist. I’m also excited about the endless possibilities of what’s to come. I just know that it’s going to be great.

I got here professionally through prayer, a strong support system, a love for music, and curiosity. Was it easy? Is it easy? Absolutely not lol. But at the end of the day I believe that’s what makes it worth it. It takes discipline, patience, and guidance. I’m human so I’m still working on the whole discipline and patience thing lol.

I overcome my challenges by facing them head on. It doesn’t matter if I’m afraid, anxious, or confident in the moment. One thing I can say is that I step up to the plate. But I have to thank God for giving me that strength.

I’ve learned so many lessons lol. Where do I actually begin? An important lesson is that you have to practice. I know that sounds like common sense. However, if you are gifted you may not feel like you have to put in the work. Gag is, you do. When you do practice, give it your best. Push the limits. It’s the only way you are going to get better. If you make beats, set a schedule and make at least one a day. If you sing, practice your scales. If you rap and write, do so everyday. Also, just be friendly, greet people, and show those you come in contact the same love and respect that you would want to receive.

I want to the world to know that I still believe in love and keeping it alive. As far as my story and my life, I pray that you get to know me through my art and if that’s not enough, pull up to a show. I would love to talk to you, I’m an open book lol.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is a tough one. But thankfully, I have a week. I’m a big foodie, so we would have to start off with some phenomenal food. More specifically, some great authentic Jamaican food. I mean, you just can’t go wrong with Jamaican food lol. I would then like to explore museums. All forms of art are inspiring to me and feed my soul. Hopefully, my best friend shares the same sentiments. Also, going to museums are a great way to start conversations.

I would like to go to a local festival. Just to experience and briefly immerse ourselves in the culture and to get out and see the people. I love to learn about others and hear their stories. I love to feel connected to others. We would have to hear some good live music. Nothing beats a live band. The energy is unmatched. 10 out of 10 will always recommend.

Lastly, I would like to take them somewhere in nature. It could be a hike or a simple walk by a river/beach. Just to breathe fresh air, unwind, and feel the sun, you know? I think you can find a lot of peace in these places. Given the nature of the world today, we spend a lot of time plugged in/tethered to technology. Getting away to unplug and to enjoy the beauty of nature is something that we need on a daily basis. I truly believe it grounds us and recalibrates the spirit.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
God! He is so good and so amazing. Without him none of this would be possible. After that, I have a few people that I’d like to recognize. I want to recognize my beautiful wife Nathalie, my mother, my father, my siblings, and my good friend Mrs. April Robin. Lastly, I want to recognize all of my supporters. All of you have my heart.
