We had the good fortune of connecting with Daisha Calhoun and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daisha, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There were a lot of forces that pulled me to starting my own business. For one, it was a way for me to merge all the things I loved, my skills and passion into one thing that allowed me to make a difference. With a background in studio art, painting, ceramics and sculpture, I always has a creative calling. At the time, I was working in museums with hopes of being a curator which lead me into planning an unveiling reception for a new exhibit. In that moment, I never felt so at home in my purpose. I was able to plan details, create vision boards and handle all the meticulous details with ease that made me question how I had never thought of this as a career before. Fast forward to 2021 and years of corporate planning, venue management and every other role in an event you can think of, I figured it was time to really make a go with this, on my own. It has not been easy but I cannot see myself slowing down anytime soon!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Once I decided that I wanted to start my own business, the main focus was wedding and event planning. I love the obsessing over the details, organizing timelines and making sure everything runs smoothly. I feel as though I finally come alive in those crunch time moments. A surprise element has been floral design. My love for plants and flowers started as just a way to connect with my father after his passing. It was a difficult time for me to process that grief. Using it as a way to connect with him, heal and to appreciate the beauty of life, I stumbled upon a gift I never would have pictured having. One thing I want the world to know is this business is more than just a business to me. Every event I take on, you will find my family members by my side in some capacity. We laugh, we create and most importantly we love each other deeply. Each client, past, present and future, adds to that family and community I am trying to create!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So many great spots around, but I am such a homebody lol!!! I force anyone who visits me to go to brunch! One of my favorite places is Breakfast at Ruiz in West Columbia! Amazing food and mimosas! A trip to Columbia Museum of Art is always on the itinerary as a former museum girl followed by a trip to the library! I am an avid reader and I am always supporting local libraries! Next would stop to a coffee shop and read. I actually am trying to try all the local shops, it is a fun little game for me. From there I think i would need a little nap lol but afterwards I love going to Bang Back Pinball Lounge! So much fun and nostalgia.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hands down, my family!! From the start, they have been my biggest supporters. From listening to my ideas, the constant photo approvals for Instagram posts, my nerves on if I am good enough and most of all on wedding days assisting me with set ups, I could not do ANY of this without them! Especially the best assistant around, my six year old daughter Zuri!! She sets up a chair like no other lol and her little mini arrangements she makes fill me with so much joy! They all are my rock.
