We had the good fortune of connecting with Brae Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brae, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My primary motivation for starting my business was community. I believe in creating a space in Charleston where all minorities feel welcomed and included. Throughout my life, I’ve observed a disconnect in opportunities and representation for people of color, and I wanted to address that. My goal is to foster a sense of belonging and support, allowing everyone to thrive together. By prioritizing community, I hope was to create not just a business, but a movement that empowers and uplifts voices.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others? That’s an interesting question. Younger me would have loved this! The older me is all about community—not about setting myself apart or having a competitive nature, but rather about focusing on connection. I’ve always embraced being the “plug” or “the connector” for people. I enjoy sharing my resources—no strings attached—because I genuinely want to see community thrive.
How did I get to where I am today? It’s all about having solid people around me—those who are willing to teach and share. I’m forever grateful for those who saw the best in me.
Another challenge I’ve faced is simply being a woman, and even more so, a Black woman! I started my career in the South, specifically Charleston, a place rich in history and complexity.
What I want the world to know about my brand and story is this: community is my passion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Love this question, best friend is town. The lineup is easy! Friday, we’re starting with Graft, then heading over to Bar Rollins. Might start with Happy Hour at Babas for tiny martini!
On Saturday, we’re hitting up Aaron’s Seafood—seriously one of the BEST spots in Charleston. It’s family-owned and has the best blue crabs in the city!
And to wrap up the weekend, we’ll start Sunday with some delicious margaritas at Rebel. It’s one of my favorite spots—super chill with great food.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shoutout to my ride or die, my she-ro—my mom. She’s a true legend and the ultimate boss in my life. Her support, love, and encouragement have shaped me in countless ways. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her.
Cheers to all the incredible things she’s done and continues to do! She’s literally the definition of beating the odds—a true hustler with unmatched strength. Love you, Mom!
