Deciding to pursue an artistic or creative career path isn’t for the faint of heart. Challenges will abound, but so many of the artists we speak with couldn’t be happier with their choice. So, we asked them about how they made the decision in the first place.

Keith Davis | Jazz pianist, composer and educator

I don’t think there was any other choice. I grew up in a family that was deeply involved in church music. I grew with that my whole young life, singing in church choirs, etc. My dad was in the Air Force, but also served as music director at churches wherever we moved in the service. Erika Haas | Macrame & other fiber artist

All my life I’ve been creative, I’d make something out of nothing and be proud of it! My family really catered to my creativity and allowed me to explore whatever medium I was interested in. I’ve always been passionate about upcycling, and making something more beautiful than it was before. This is still a value I carry over into my business today by using recycled fiber and shipping materials. Two years ago my dad passed away & this was really hard on me. I was sinking into depression and couldn’t find my way out. My therapist suggested finding something outside of myself, keeping my mind and hands busy. I discovered macrame, taught myself how to knot and was in love! I didn’t think I’d make any type of career of it at first. I was encouraged by my family and friends to pursue a career in my craft, because I do what I do differently than anyone else they’d seen. After a while, I agreed I had unique pieces and decided to take a chance and bet on myself. I had – and still have, a great support system who encourage me when I need it. Collington Avenue | Fashion Influencers

Our mother has always taught us the importance of representing ourselves well in society and that has lended itself into the way we’ve dressed throughout our lives. Through that we have discovered our love for fashion and creating curated looks, which speak to our individual styles. Thus Collington Avenue was born from that. Collington is our mother’s maiden name that she gave to us as middle names, and our fashion blog is an ode to her. We’ve also strived to show young women they don’t have to spend more to look better.
