We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany Colon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tiffany, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance is a hard one and I imagine that most female business owners feel the same. In addition to my small business (She Shed Cookies & Boards), I have a doctorate and manage a very corporate role, and I am also a single mom to an almost three-year-old. I am still learning to “perfect” the balance so I am not cranking out cookies at 2AM, but inevitably, I find myself at 2AM trying to wrap up just one more set. In the chaos of the orders, I lean into feelings of gratitude that clients entrust me with their most sacred events – a rainbow baby shower, a twins 81st birthday, a bachelorette in the mountains – those are just a few of the orders I’ve taken this week. It’s really an honor. The quiet morning hours are also some of the calmest, so I find a lot of beauty in that, as well. Some key things I’ve done to have a better balance are: begrudgingly declining last minute orders and sticking to a 3 day timeline (bake/flood, decorate, dry/package). It is an acquired skill to say “no” or “not this time”, but the clients who know the quality of my work are very understanding and respect both the intricacy of my work and the time it takes to produce it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
There are so many talented cookiers in the greater Charleston area, so I knew I had to set myself apart from the herd if I wanted to be successful. In addition to cookie decorating, I invested in a high-end edible printer that allows me to print logo cookies for businesses. Soft, delicious cookies with a logo are just so much better than a koozie, in my opinion. I also bought a 3D printer and learned the ins and outs of 3D printing. This allows me to print any custom cookie cutter you can imagine, which means there is no theme that is off limits. Above all, I strive to be the friendliest, easiest-to-worth with cookie artist that you’ve ever interacted with. I think the customer service I offer has been the greatest asset to the business, and the reviews on our page echo the same. I’m most proud of the repeat orders we’ve had from customers – I truly believe that is the biggest compliment you could give to a small business. Arriving at the state of the business today was never easy – I miss out on a lot of social events because I have orders to fulfill, and I sacrificed relationships that thought my baking was “silly” or “obsessive”. The relationships that I have held onto are not only clapping for me behind the scenes, but they are sharing my content, commenting on my posts, and value my work ethic. Those are your people. What I hope others would grow to know about my business is that is a privilege and an honor to create works of art for you, I certainly don’t take the task lightly, and I am forever grateful for your trust in me to enhance your event.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, this is a fun one! Saltwater Cowboy is always a top recommendation because I could sit all day and watch the dolphins, sipping on a cocktail (or mocktail). I had a fun “mom’s night out” recently at Uptown Social – the DJ did not allow us to sit for the 3 hours we were there – such a great time. 167 Raw Oyster Bar is one of my favorites – their tuna burger is insane and their oysters are to die for. I recently went to The Peacock on E Bay St – the bartenders are so sweet and their menu is a solid five stars.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to dedicate this shoutout to a few people. First, my parents, Peter and Robin Colon. They are wonderful parents and even better grandparents. They help me carry the load, taking my son to daycare, around the neighborhood for a golf cart ride, over to their house for dinner – and a million other things that allow me to wear all of the hats and be as productive as I desire. There would be no “She Shed Cookies & Boards” without them. I’d also like to acknowledge Raising Rose Kitchen (Anna Choniere), the neighborhood of Foxbank in Moncks Corner for all of their support, and HB Digital Marketing LLC (Hailey O’Dell) for all of the collabs. I am forever grateful.
