We had the good fortune of connecting with Susanne Troutt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susanne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was able to earn early retirement at the age of 59. My dream has always to do something with art, crafts, and decor after retirement. It was perfect timing as the original owner of The Kindred Spirits wanted to retire. We have been friends for many years and I have been a customer since her grand opening 7 years ago. I decided to take a risk and purchase the business so I can do what I love, interact with friends, family, and new customers from around the world. I love being downtown and interacting with people in Spartanburg.
I want to bring one of a kind, hand made items to the community. I am working diligently to become a part of the downtown community.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We are a unique shop with one of a kind items handmade by approximately 70 local artists. We do not go to market for our items. We have clothes, table cloths, table runners, purses, scarves, upscaled clothes, jewelry, ceramics, pottery, wood, metal, greeting cards and many types of paintings for homes or businesses. I worked 34 years in the corporate business world so I was well equipped to start the business. I have always been an artist but that is something that I have set aside for many years. Now, I’m back to creating.
I have learned to be patient, connect, advertise, and do new marketing.
I want to the world to know that I love what I do and I will always treat all artists and customers with the utmost respect and honor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my many family, friends, and mentors that have been there for me over the years. I want to thank my husband for his support and my daughter for her example of being courageous.
