We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheinata DeAnna Carn-Hall and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sheinata DeAnna, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of Reflections African Jewelry LLC is that I have allowed myself to grow and change with the flow of the fashion industry. For instance since COVID many brick and mortar small businesses have closed. They have began to focus more on selling their products and services online. Many were already doing this but the trend has grown tremendously. As business owners we are all unique as far as how we present our offerings to the world. My choice was a dream that I have had for a long time. And that is to wholesale my products. Slowly my business goals are being achieved. Most of the clients that are purchasing wholesale are museums. That is so gratifying to me since my African jewelry designs are a type of style that combines African, Cherokee and folk art. Indigenous to the local Gullah and Maroon culture of the south so it seems natural for my handmade designs to be in museums to continue to share the traditions and culture of my ancestors. Remembering to be fluid and flexible but yet original and authentic to who I am has been some of the most important factors in creating success for my brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I specialize in African Art jewelry. So most of my designs are unique and interesting. The materials that I use are mostly natural or recycled elements that are indigenous to Africa. I also incorporate crystals, stones, shells and wood in my art. One of the things that have helped me is that my handmade works are great conversation pieces. Most of the beads have stories and a rich culture connected to them that can become a great way to meet new people and socialize. Many of my customers have came back and shared some of their experiences with me. My business has had ups and downs like most businesses but it has always been the excitement of my customers that has kept me going. After all these are ideas that I am coming up with to make the jewelry so I am always in shock and awe at how the customers can see the love and passion that I put into my work and appreciate it enough to buy it. I want the world to know that yes you can live off of your creativity. Hopefully it will inspire those that are creative, gifted and talented.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If a friend was visiting I would first take them to Holy City Brewery in Park Circle to challenge them to a game of Horseshoe! It’s a nice location right on the Creek. You know it just feels like a good place to experience a unique aspect of Charleston. They have some good food there too. Next we would go to the Isle of Palms and take a walk on the beach at night. Hopefully it’s a full moon and high tide. I love the sound of the ocean and wind. It’s so relaxing and comforting. Then we would get a bite to eat at Sesame Burgers in Mt. Pleasant. They have a nice selection of gourmet burgers. The last spot I would take my visiting friend would be The Beidler Forest in a the small town of Dorchester. Its a 2 mile walk through the oldest Black Swamp & Tupelo forest in the world. There is a canopy that covers the whole boardwalk. After visiting the forest we would probably relax from a busy week and cook a meal together.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This shoutout is dedicated to my mom for instilling in me good morals and values. She taught me to never give up on myself and my dreams.
