We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Pruitt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shannon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Long story short: I left one entrepreneurial journey for another.
I was sitting at the kitchen table with my husband, our 6-month old daughter upstairs in her crib. It’d been only 4 months since I closed my first business (wedding planning and design). And I finally admitted I had a burning desire to be creative while helping meet our family’s needs.
I knew something had to change.
So with my husband’s encouragement, I decided to start Sunday Muse Design. And even though I had NO clue how I was going to start a new business with a baby, I knew it was possible and I took the leap of faith. And that leap changed everything.
I leaned into my love of design, marketing, and writing. Like most small businesses, Sunday Muse evolved. Now it’s a beautiful mix of some of my biggest passions…AND I (along with my small team of amazing women) get to help other passionate business owners grow their own brands.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Like I mentioned, my journey has evolved. While I was a school teacher, I started my wedding planning and design company. And it grew faster than I ever anticipated. I loved it, and I loved my team. But things change. I made the difficult decision to close its doors because I was getting burnt out. The pace I was going was no longer sustainable.
And I’ve taken a lot of what I learned from my first business and been able to apply it to this one. While I’m not perfect, I’ve learned how to scale and run my business so that it is sustainable. So that I can experience the freedom that comes with entrepreneurship.
Has this journey been easy? Absolutely not. But most entrepreneurial journeys aren’t easy. You’ve got to put in the work. You’ve got to be willing to fail and learn and grow. Grit and grace.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I LOVE living in the Upstate. I would absolutely take her to downtown Greenville one day to grab coffee and a biscuit from Biscuit Head, followed by a day of shopping in all the boutiques off Main Street. If it were a Saturday morning between May-October, we’d 100% visit the Saturday Market. We’d make our way down to Falls Park (because you can’t visit Greenville without seeing it).
Other things that we’d do: Rent bikes and ride the Swamp Rabbit Trail to Furman with a stop at The Swamp Rabbit Cafe, hike Table Rock, grab lunch and a drink at Southern Growl in Greer, have some fun at Group Therapy Pub & Playground, go antiquing in Landrum, and have a nice dinner one night at The Patterson at Hotel Hartness.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It’s next to impossible for me to dedicate my shoutout to one singular person… there are so many people in my life who have been my biggest encouragers, supporters, and cheerleaders. My husband, my family, my friends. They’ve all been so influential in my entrepreneurial journey. Running a business isn’t a joke. It take a lot of grace and a lot of grit. And having people who are constantly there to lift you up when you’re feeling haggard or who are there to celebrate with you through even the smallest wins is HUGE in helping you to keep going. I’m so grateful to have friends and family who support me.
