We had the good fortune of connecting with Scott Truman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, how do you think about risk?
Taking any kind of risk in my career and or life has only brought lessons in which I’ve grown stronger and progressed in a way that’s only positive!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I like to say that might art looks like realism and CGI meet in the middle. Everything has to be shaded and a more 3d element is brought to each piece.

What sets me apart from others is what drives my art and how I present it. Like I said unless I’m painting a custom food truck or mural for a company. My canvas art is usually a new and fresh visual based on song lyrics that really resonate with my heart. “How would this song lyric look visually to me?” I ask myself.
“How does this relate to my life and experience? “

My art use to be solely based on painting a physical singer or movie character I loved, but now im channeling a feeling or experience I’ve had through a song lyric that I love, which gives me the best of both worlds, pop culture and my actual feelings and thoughts. So I’m excited to see how that comes to life and what it looks with future pieces.

Getting to where I am now with my art career has not been easy but has absolutely worth it, and I can only imagine how much further it’ll take me.

I have drawn since I could pick up a crayon, and my freshman year of high school I was introduced to acrylic paints and from there the rest is history, I was staying up all hours of the night starting and finishing paintings. I was in heaven. From high school to my adulthood life I was painting here and there, a few commissions every so many years but nothing concrete. I didn’t know how to even start to being building a business with my talent. In 2019 I was involved in a accident where my body was struck by a car crossing the street, I fractured a vertebrae and then another vertebrae exploded and I was in a halo brace healing for 5 months, during that time I had a lot of moments where I thought “I was given this gift that I’ve used for years, but not in a way where I could make it my source of income and livelyhood. I was hit with the thought of how I wasn’t exploring and using this gift of painting that I’ve been given. From there it has taken me on a path that has been my art growing, in technical ways and business ways.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend came on a trip to Charleston I would take them to the following places which are my favorite places.

Folly Beach
The pour house on James island
Bar George on James island
Neon Tiger downtown
Prohibition downtown
The James on James island
Five loaves in mount pleasant
Kid cashew in mount pleasant

I’d have them walk the battery also

I’d have them walk the ravanel bridge, go to Shem creek,

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Unless I’m painting a good truck or specific mural for a company. My paintings are mainly based off of pop culture, Wether that’s me painting the face of one of the most iconic singers, or bringing a new visualization to a song lyric that sits with me.
