We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Rosenthal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After moving to Mount Pleasant, I quickly learned how many people had dogs and how absolutely loved their dogs were! At the time, I was working 9-5 in an office job, and rushing home to walk my own dog during my hour lunch break. It was stressful and it often took longer than anticipated.
2 things that I love are being outside and dogs. Being in an office environment wasn’t a dream of mine and after brainstorming for a few months, I decided that a dog walking business would be perfect for me! I saw a huge need for it and I knew I could fulfill it! So many people work long hours and don’t want their beloved pet to be alone for so long.
While I wasn’t sure at the time how to run a business, we are so lucky these days to have so much information at our fingertips. I spent hours researching and learning how to do this. Ultimately, I had to jump in head first and learn as I went. Taking care of animals comes naturally to me and I know how important reliability is. As time went on, I learned more about the business side, how to grow, manage employees, and still provide exceptional customer service!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Wag Factor specializes in midday dog walks, between the hours of 10am-4pm. We are a great fit for individuals who work long hours, or elderly folks who may not be able to exercise their dogs properly.
At The Wag Factor, we work as a team, and all of our walkers are employees, not contractors. This means that they all go through extensive training that includes pet CPR, an online training course that covers what we do, emergency situations, dealing with the heat, etc., and shadow walks before they get started on their own. The wonderful thing about working as a team is that we can always guarantee a walk that is on our schedule. As our client, you never have to worry about us canceling or not showing up. All team members are equipped to cover all dog walks. We can do this because we require a meet and greet for every client before starting services. This enables us to meet you and your dog and ensure that we would be the right fit to work together.
It’s been so rewarding building this business. We have the best clients and the most reliable walkers. It’s been challenging as business ebbs and flows and as I learn what would be in our best interest as far as the services we offer. After many years of providing an array of services, I learned that midday dog walks are what we are best suited for. Niching down helped promote The Wag Factor in a clear way and make us experts at the service we provide.
After every visit we do, we send our clients a report that includes a message, pictures, and a report card via our client app. These are so much fun and ensure that your pup is in good hands while you’re away.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sullivan’s Island, Pitt St Bridge, Melfis, Weltons, Folly Beach, Off Track Ice Cream, Waterfront Park
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I had various coaches on my entrepreneurial journey! Colleen with Pet Nanny and Bella with Jump Consulting were 2 huge catalysts in my success as a business owner.
