We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sarah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Without risk there is no growth, personally or professionally. I think we need to take risks to see what we are truly capable of and what our lives and businesses can become. The most successful people that I know have taken the biggest risks and it’s because they are confident in themselves and go for it. They don’t waste time playing it safe.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
What sets Sarah Alexis apart from other fashion brands is our approach and materials. We utilize luxury materials that will hold up with wear and last you for years rather than one or two seasons. We also support support slow fashion and ethical manufacturing. This means that we aren’t churning out collection after collection, but instead are putting more intention and better craftsmanship into fewer collections. A lot of the industry has become this wheel of creating product after product that is hopefully consumed. This is leading to a lot of unsold inventory ending up in landfills or destroyed. I’d rather support a back to basics approach that I believe to be more sustainable and representative of true artisanship.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh, there are so many good spots here in Charleston!

I live on Daniel island, so I would definitely make sure to take them to the Kingstide, the Dime, and Laura Alberts at some point. Walking at the Daniel island waterfront is my favorite ways to relax, so we’d do that as well. I’d take them to see a show at Credit One Stadium and take the Daniel island ferry to downtown one night.

There are too many fun attractions downtown to name them all, but I love getting coffee at Harken, going to the art galleries on First Friday, and going to Second Sunday on King Street. Henry’s, Blind Tiger, Rooftop at Vendue, and Cocktail Club are all fun for a night out. My favorite downtown restaurants are Chez Nous, Melfi’s, Felix, Sorelle, Hank’s Seafood, and Leon’s Oyster Shop.

I love hanging out in Sullivan’s island and always take my friends here. My favorite spots are Sullivan’s Fish Camp, Goldbug, A Maker’s Post, Home Team, and the Co-op. I’d also take them shopping in Mount Pleasant to Celadon, Monkee’s, Out of Hand, Gwynn’s, and Abide A While. If we’re in Mount Pleasant, we’re of course getting brunch at the Post House and stopping by Shem Creek and Pitt Street Bridge.

If we have time to make it to Isle of Palms, we’re hitting the beach, going to Islander 71, and stopping by the Windjammer for a concert.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many names that I can shout out here. Honestly, without my friends and family this dream would have never come to fruition. If I were to name one, my husband, Stephen, deserves the biggest shoutout of all. He’s been in my corner since I first thought of starting my own brand and consistently pushed me to go after it. Whenever I doubted myself or had imposter syndrome (because we all do at some point), he would build me up with confidence and remind me that I could do anything that I wanted to. He’s a true gem.
