We had the good fortune of connecting with Rashelle Houck and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rashelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At first, my baking was a hobby, something I picked up when my kiddos were online learning from their public schools.
As it grew into a small side business, I began making plans on how I could turn it into something full time.
My family and I moved here to Moncks Corner in early 2022 where I was able to really grow my skill and clientele. After one year, I began doing more Wedding cakes and desserts. Two years later, between my baking and my branch off Wedding coordination business, I am full time, and happily homeschooling my two kiddos in the process.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always loved baking, but the decorating part wasn’t something I strived to do amazing at. In 2020 when hot cocoa bombs became THE thing everyone wanted, I decided that I could definitely do that!
After that I had a spark to learn more. I remember being intimidated by cupcakes that I can now as second nature. I kept learning, growing, failing, and succeeding.
I am most proud of how far I’ve come on decorating and on cakes. I love doing vintage cakes, and anything floral! I think my constant need to think outside the box sets me apart in my field.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With moving here almost 3 years ago, I’m still learning where everything is, and what the best spots are.
The beach, obviously would be a top pick and there are so many beautiful ones to choose from. I love the laid back feel of Sullivan’s island, plus that’s my maiden name haha! So that’s a stop for sure.
Download Charleston is so beautiful and historic. Visiting those staples like Rainbow Row, Waterfront Park, and White Point Garden as well as discovering new places I haven’t been to yet like Charleston City Market, Magnolia Plantation, and Angel Oak Tree are definitely on the agenda.
Also places outside of Charleston, Moncks Corner is really beautiful and life moves a bit slower. Santee Canal Park and Cypress Gardens are some of my new favorite places.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Goodness, so many people. Definitely my family. They have sacrificed time as most months have been spent non stop working, as well as space in our home as I transform rooms to support baking.
They hop in with making boxes, grabbing things from the store, and the 5-7 business days of dishes haha!
My customers, as I refer to as customerfriends have been patient, supportive, encouraging, and amazing with helping me grow.
My neighbors and friends who gladly let my kiddos hang with them on times when I’m spending all day in the kitchen.
My family who is always supportive encouraging from states away and always are amazed at what I’ve been able to teach myself.
