We had the good fortune of connecting with Phiara Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phiara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business was created to decrease the disturbingly high maternal mortality rates in the BIPOC community. Initially, my thought process was to coach and guide moms on the important components of parenthood (mothers and fathers) that healthcare professionals in the maternal child world have been neglecting. To be specific, postpartum planning, understanding their rights during childbirth, perinatal mental health and serving as a trusted resource for new parents with questions and unsure who to turn to. My initial services ranged from Prenatal Q&A, Partner 101, Unexpected Outcomes Q&A, Labor and Delivery Prep, 4th Trimester, Perinatal Mental Health Boost.
I am currently working on an academy specifically for the empowerment of Fathers! I am praying for a Marketing Intern to help me get the word out.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I take great pride in the diverse experiences that have shaped my career. I began my journey in maternal child nursing in 2012, working 12-hour night shifts at an inner-city trauma center in Irvington, NJ. This role sparked my dedication to serving the underserved BIPOC community. The 18 months I spent there provided invaluable lessons—more than many acquire in a decade of nursing. Starting with no prior experience was challenging, but it pushed me to rise to the occasion and support a population that often didn’t prioritize their health and faced limited access to education and wellness advocacy.
When I realized the toll night shifts were taking on my health and faced personal struggles with infertility, I made a significant change and moved to a trauma hospital in an affluent area near NYC. This role still involved caring for a high-risk population, but with a different socioeconomic backdrop. It was a major adjustment, and one of my most profound realizations was that economic status doesn’t always influence a person’s willingness or ability to seek out and act on the information needed to advocate for their own health and well-being.
Throughout my career, I have held various roles, but being a nurse home visitor and a professor have given me the greatest sense of purpose. Working in people’s homes allowed me to nurture and support those who were underserved and overlooked without judgment or bias. It fostered genuine connections that made it possible to advocate for, educate, and understand their needs in real time.
Teaching gave me the opportunity to inspire and instill in future nurses the values that make our profession so respected and trusted. I modeled compassion, active listening, keen assessment skills, and kindness, ensuring that each student I had the honor of teaching could see and feel the importance of these core qualities.
My biggest lessons learned along the way would be: Never believe you are better than anyone else, You stop growing when you think you know it all, NEVER judge a book by its cover, and Change starts with you and me!
I want the world to know, a girl from Paterson, NJ had a dream and despite the many hurdles of discrimination, hazing, sleepless nights, fear and so much doubt, I am making things happen to provide hope and create a change!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would absolutely take my BFF to Anson in downtown Charleston. The food is amazing and the service is top notch! I would also go to The Knot in Summerville for drinks and burgers, live music and fun. I would also take her to Top Golf for the atmosphere vibes and good times (Pet friendly).
Another great place for some great seafood is Low country Fish camp! Love their corn hole, fresh seafood and friendly staff.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a special acknowledgment to my husband for being my most devoted and selfless supporter. From day one, he was there to help me study, keep me grounded during moments of doubt, and step in when I stayed up late finishing assignments. He shouldered extra responsibilities during the demanding 12-hour shifts in Labor and Delivery and consistently showed up as the partner I needed through countless phases of my life. He is truly the ultimate MVP!
