We had the good fortune of connecting with Paa Kutortse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paa, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The one hour spent at the shoot represents only 0.1% of the time required to complete the entire project. Too often, people compare the time spent shooting to the price, asking, “Why is a 20-minute shoot $500?” They overlook the time invested in perfecting the craft, enabling a photographer to accomplish in 20 minutes what might otherwise take two hours of experimenting with angles, lighting, and poses. They also forget the hours spent editing, as well as the time dedicated to learning and refining those editing skills to deliver photos within 48 hours instead of four weeks. The value of photographers and videographers extends far beyond the time spent at the shoot; it encompasses the countless hours, days, weeks, and years devoted to mastering their craft.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My photography and videography are a blend of storytelling, artistry, and detail, focusing on capturing the raw and unfiltered moments that often go unnoticed. My work is set apart through my commitment to authenticity; I strive to portray the true essence of my subjects, whether it’s the expression of joy, the quiet moments of reflection, or the vibrant energy at a concert. The journey to where I am today has been a challenging but rewarding one. Was it easy? No, there were times when I doubted my abilities and struggled to find my unique voice amidst a sea of talented photographers and videographers. However, I overcame these challenges by continuously honing my skills, seeking constructive feedback, and staying true to my passion. The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is the importance of perspective and not comparing myself or my work to others, especially in an industry where value is extremely objective. I want the world to know that my brand and story are rooted in a love for capturing life’s beautiful imperfections and perfections, and a dedication to connecting with people through my Nikon lenses.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When it comes to anything aside from my business, I am the friend who does not like to make plans but just goes with the vibe. Probably I skill I gained after being surprised by the rain too many times on outdoor shoots. However, if I had to make plans, this would be my little itinerary.
Monday: Start strong. A lift session at either USC’s Wellness and Fitness Center or Brickhouse gym. Lifting at USC will be an opportunity to explore the USC campus since I am a student there majoring in economics and supply chain.
Tuesday: A day at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden.
Wednesday: Spend the morning kayaking on the Congaree River or hiking in Congaree National Park.
Thursday: A day dedicated to history and art, starting with a visit to the South Carolina State Museum, followed by a visit to the Columbia Museum of Art would be perfect to appreciate some local and international art. The afternoon would include a walk through the historic Hampton-Preston Mansion and Gardens.
Friday: Experience the nightlife of five points.
Saturday: A day trip to nearby Lake Murray for boating, fishing, or just relaxing by the water after a night at five points would offer a change of pace. At night we’d enjoy dinner at Halls Chophouse, a premier steakhouse in Columbia.
Sunday: Definately spend the morning at Forward City Church, thanking God for an awesome week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I firmly believe that friends and family should be the first in line to support a business, willing to pay the full price instead of seeking discounts. They understand the value and have witnessed the hard work and dedication poured into my business.
On that note, I want to give a heartfelt shoutout to all my friends and family who have supported me, whether by patronizing my services or sharing them with others. I also extend my gratitude to all the businesses and individuals who have trusted me to capture important moments in their lives. Lastly, I thank God for guiding and sustaining me through this journey.
