We had the good fortune of connecting with Natalie Stoner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Natalie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been a defining element of my journey as a cosmetologist. I embarked on my cosmetology path during high school, with the intention of transitioning to a corporate role after obtaining my Bachelor’s degree in Information Science from the University of Maryland, College Park. While I did secure that corporate position after college, it left me feeling unfulfilled. Just eight months into my corporate stint, Charleston Beauty Collective approached me with a career opportunity. Though I cherished my role as a stylist when I was younger, societal pressures had always urged me to pursue a more “conventional” career, thus, making this a difficult decision.

After much deliberation, I took a bold step, leaving behind the security of a salary to embrace my passion within the beauty industry. The initial phase was challenging, with my clientele still in its infancy. Yet, I persisted, taking risks and embracing uncertainty, all to remain true to my passion. In the realm of business, obstacles are inevitable, but it’s the determination and resilience of the individual that determine the journey’s success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Deciding to change my career was terrifying, as it meant rebuilding myself from scratch. Uncertain about the future and the likelihood of success, I nevertheless recognized the necessity for change. I committed to marketing myself, networking, and diligently working every hour of every day, even without immediate financial returns. Gradually, my persistent efforts have thankfully, paid off. Through this experience, I’ve learned the importance of having confidence in navigating uncertainties and to strive for your goals, even if they feel impossible. I hold the belief that everything happens for a reason, and where there’s determination, there’s a path forward. For those enduring an unfulfilling job, I advocate taking a leap of faith, as it may change your entire life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When hosting friends, I’d kick off our day with brunch at Arts Bar and Grill, opting for the delightful Low Country Tots. Next, a visit to Folly, preceded by a refreshing iced latte stop at Center Street Coffee. After beach time, we’d explore downtown, immersing ourselves in city life and the vibrant market scene. Following a day of adventures, it’s time to freshen up for an evening in Charleston. We’d start with dinner at Saltwater Cowboys, savoring the sunset by the water. Then, a return downtown for a crafted drink experience at Camellias to cap off the night.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to express my gratitude to Jill Powell, the owner of Charleston Beauty Collective, for consistently pushing me to venture into new territories, presenting me with endless opportunities, and for standing by my side throughout my career. Additionally, I would like to shoutout my cosmetology instructor, Cori Lewis. Her unwavering belief in my potential ignited my profound passion for this industry. Lastly, I would like to give a loving thank you to my husband, Dalton Stoner, for always supporting my decisions and being my biggest fan.
