We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Huh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I struggled with my work life balance a lot over the years especially because I’m such a workaholic. When I started my first company, I was working a full time job and building my business when I got off work, so it was literally working from 8 to 5, get home and then work on my startup from 7 unitl midnight or later. I did this for 2 years straight and although it was draining, it had to be done. I knew I had to sacrafice to get to where I wanted to get to.
When I launched my current company Mobyle, I struggled with this as well. In the beginning it was just me doing everything, I was handling everything from sales, to fullfilment, to client management and more. I had no work/life balance at all.
As we grew, it really didn’t get better. I felt like I was working harder to maintain our growth and always wanted to make sure I was outworking everyone.
Recently, just this year actually, I’ve made a conscious effort to have more of a work/life balance. I do my best not to check any work emails or work slack channels during the weekends. I try to clear my head as best as I can as often as I can and it has helped me stay sharp, focused, and energized instead of feeling burnt out and overwhelmed.
Having a work/life balance is really important, whether you’re working a job or running a business. Your work takes up a majority of your life, and a lot of stress comes from your work. Stressing about keeping your job or getting that promotion, or stressing about your business and keeping it afloat. That kind of stress can really build up over time if you’re not careful, and soon you’ll start to feel like you have no joy in your life, no meaning, like you’re running a race that has no end.
The best advice I ever received was this. You can always make more money, but you can’t make more time. You have one life to live. Your time is limited. You should enjoy your life. You should have passion and go after your dreams. Yes your job or your business is important, of course it is, but your life outside of your work is just as important.
Force yourself to decompress, pick up a hobby, travel, get out of your comfort zone as much as possible.
Today is all you are guaranteed. Don’t wait to start living your life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mobyle is a full service digital marketing agency. We started out focusing more on just content marketing and social media marketing. Creating video content and photos was the beginning. And then we evolved into doing websites, doing digital ads, SEO, and even building apps.
But now we have really evolved into an agency that does done for you lead generation and appointment setting. We generate leads and appointments for our clients, get them on their calendars and they take it from there. Keeping your pipeline full and having a constant flow of hot leads that are interested in your services makes a huge difference.
Getting to where we are now was not easy at all and it’s still not easy. Running a marketing agency is very difficult. We don’t have all the answers and sometimes, a marketing plan doesn’t pan out the way we wanted. That’s just the nature of our business. Of course when that happens, we feel like we failed and as humans, no one likes to feel that way. We never want to feel like we let a client down, but sometimes, the plan just doesn’t produce the results we wanted. So whenever that happens, it’s very difficult and for me, I take that very hard at times.
But you will never grow if you are never challenged. So we take every opportunity to always learn and get better. We love challgenges and figuring things out. We are very stubborn when it comes to that.
So during this whole journey, you’re always learning. I always want to learn new things. There will always be setbacks, it’s how you deal with those setbacks that will make all the difference.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live here in beautiful Charleston so there are lots of things to do, see and eat here. As a golfer, we would play a lot of golf, not just here in Charleston, but all over South Carolina. We have some amazing golf courses here.
We would eat a lot. Some of my favorite restaurants are 843 Korean BBQ, Halls Chophouse, High Cotton, FIG, Mama Kims, Rodeny Scotts BBQ, Poogan’s Porch, and the Charleston Grill.
We have great beaches, lots of tours, would definately do the helicopter tour and boat tours, go kayaking and paddle boarding, check out downtown and probably play more golf.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve had so many incredible mentors who have helped me get to where I am now. Incredible support from family and friends. Of course I have to dedicate my first shoutout to my parents. I wouldn’t be where I am and who I am without them. They have supported and loved me and guided me all throughout my life.
I also have to give a shoutout to Mike Mazell. When I first started Mobyle, I had no idea what I was doing really. I was just trying to figure it out. I didn’t know how I was going to really grow. Mike who is the GM of Stokes Volkswagen gave me my first big chance. He trusted me to handle their marketing account and then introduced me to all the other Stokes Auto GM’s and because of him, they trusted me and signed on as well.
That was a huge break for me. I was barely making ends meet and all of a sudden, because of the trust he gave me, it allowed Mobyle to really take off.
