We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, is there something you believe many others might not?
While this piece of advice doesn’t come in the form of a nifty little quote, I feel that we live in a society that is incredibly future-focused. Everyone is always looking towards a future life plan, future dreams, future goals, and simply the future. We have this warped belief that the future equates to bigger and better than what we have now. I have to disagree with this. One of the first books that guided me in my growth journey was The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. To give you a quick summary, Eckhart Tolle presents the idea that the future and past only exist in the mind. The only time that actually exists is the present. With this teaching deep in my mind, I hope to use my work to shift society’s view to focus on the present. What you do with your time now is key to building that future you hope for. By living in this moment and accepting it as the best possible time to act, you can excel in anything you set your mind to.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional life has been anything but traditional. I secured my first real marketing job a week after graduating high school with a brand new business based in Chicago called Metaphysical Pilates. Shortly after my career began, I started my academic journey at the University of South Carolina. While attending this outstanding university, I have spent my time studying marketing, film and media, and business analytics. I have also had the privilege of serving as the president of USC’s chapter of the American Marketing Association and founding my own organization, the Pokémon Trainer’s Association, which I serve as the Vice President for. When considering my professional experience thus far, I would have to admit it was been quite a rollercoaster. Every success story has been backed by overcoming obstacles, learning from my mistakes, and taking criticism with gratitude and grace. One of the most important concepts I have taken from my experiences is that I am simply a 21-year-old girl. It is crazy to think that I have lived so much life and still have unimaginable amounts more to experience. When the going gets tough, I try to remember that at the end of the day, I am just a kid experiencing it all for the first time and that these lessons will help foster growth that will last a lifetime.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As an Ohio native, coming to Columbia, South Carolina for college was a major change. While I have only been here for a little over two years, I have to say this city has welcomed me as one of its own. If I had to plan a perfect day in Columbia, South Carolina, it would have to start with brunch at Market on Main or Publico. After brunch, I would need to stroll along the Cayce River Walk or check out the local vendors at a Soda City Saturday. When looking for my next meal I would find quite a bit of difficulty choosing between my local favorites. Columbia is home to incredible restaurants such as Motor Supply Co., Di Vinos, Cantina, MOA Korean BBQ, and Tsunami. If you’re looking for recommendations from a college kid, I would have to say the best places to hang out after hours in Columbia are Rooftop, Saloon, Art Bar, or Jake’s. If you’re in the mood for late-night grub, I would recommend Sammi’s Deli, Eddie’s Calzones, or Beezers. Depending on the time of year you’re in town, Columbia has a variety of amazing holiday festivals to attend such as St. Patrick’s Day in Five Points, Famously Hot South Carolina Pride, and Vista Lights Christmas Market. Of course, the most important recommendation is if it is a Saturday in the fall, you must swing by Willy B and check out the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mentor, my dear friend, and my spiritual mother: Gloria Santiago has been a guiding light throughout my personal and professional journey thus far. I connected with Gloria about a week after graduating high school and quickly became a part of her passion project, Metaphysical Pilates. Metaphysical Pilates is a Pilates studio in West Loop, Chicago that focuses on fostering healing and growth at all levels of the human being. Metaphysical Pilates reconnects us back to our center through spiritual science and matter. Gloria saw potential in me that I never even realized I had. Over the last three years, she has always been there for advice, to celebrate my successes, and to give me an extra push when life gets challenging. She has introduced me to the world of metaphysics and entrusted me with the vision and presentation of her world-changing work. There are not enough words in existence to express my gratitude and love for Gloria. She is an inspiration, a hard worker, a girl boss, and one of the coolest people I have ever met.
