We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Tang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Max, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think it’s about courageously persevering in doing what you believe is right. We’re not the kind of people who have perfect conditions to start our own business, especially for us, as first-time entrepreneurs, we lack many things such as experience, assets, and language skills. But what we do have is a bit more courage than others. Head spa is a very innovative way of relaxation, and the road to promoting it is filled with unknowns. At the same time, we moved from another city to this place because we love the distinct seasons and friendly community relations of this city, which made us determined to make the decision to start our business here. Starting our first venture in a new place, promoting something that nobody has tried before, it does require a significant amount of courage.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our business is a spa focused primarily on scalp treatment, it involves providing guests with relaxation and care for the scalp, aiming to improve scalp and hair conditions while offering maximum relaxation through head massages. We are also proud of the cozy and welcoming atmosphere we’ve created. The entire décor of the shop was personally arranged by us. Many of the vintage decorations were purchased along the way as we drove from California, each item carrying its own unique story. Therefore, we aim to make our guests feel the warmth and tranquility we provide, allowing them to relax and enjoy the full service. Here, clients can truly sense that they are valued and cared for.
For us, reaching this point today hasn’t been an easy journey. We’ve had to explore many unknown territories and experience numerous firsts along the way. I believe setting goals together and diligently executing our respective responsibilities has been key in leading us to where we are now.
During the entrepreneurial journey, I’ve come to understand not to be afraid of the unknown. There are numerous ways and resources available to us to understand a new field. When we gather enough information, we often realize that things aren’t as difficult to solve as we initially feared. Fear often stems from within ourselves rather than the situation itself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A trip to Greenville typically begins with a downtown Main Street in the downtown area. This long pedestrian street is connected by bridges, crossing rivers, with a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, and all kinds of studios lining its sides. One must-visit spot is a furniture store call Vintage Now Modern located beside the street. I particularly love the style of furniture inside—elegant yet vintage, with dried flowers adorning every corner. The sunlight streaming through the windows adds another layer of charm.
Next, I suggest heading to the park. From the Liberty Bridge, you can catch a glimpse of the Reedy River Falls. Walking along the shaded riverbank is the most relaxing part of the journey.
For dining options, we can try Sushi Masa for ramen and sushi rolls, or Ginza Buffet on Woodruff Road for a variety of American-Chinese cuisine. The pastries there are fluffy and soft, truly authentic. Chunchun Asian Cuisine also offers tasty dishes, but it’s best to dine in as Chinese takeout tends to lose its freshness.
We can also visit Greenville Zoo, it’s a great choice for a family outing. And when the sun sets, we can head to Palace Billiards or Topgolf for a good time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our entrepreneurial journey has been extremely challenging. As our first venture into business, we’ve been fortunate to receive wisdom and advice from our friends and kind assistance from strangers along the way. However, the person I am most grateful for is my mother, who is also my business partner. She has consistently played the role of decision-maker, navigating us through tough situations where there seemed to be no easy way out. Her intelligence has repeatedly helped us overcome obstacles, and her courage and decisiveness in facing unknown territory have guided us forward. It’s thanks to her that we’ve reached where we are today.
