We had the good fortune of connecting with Mavis Gentry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mavis, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
The impact that I make in the community to help educate the youth about hair, is what I would like people to remember about me. My legacy will live on through my 6 children. I plan to show them everything there is to know about my business so that things will run smoothly when I’m no longer here.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Salon Owner/Operator of a Kids Hair Salon by the name of Young Tresses by Mavis. What sets me apart from other stylist is that I have a passion for reaching kids. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to be able to service all types of kids. I’m so grateful that God granted me this gift to be of assistance to others that need me. Getting my business to where it is today took blood, sweat and tears. Getting in the mindset of going back to the drawing board when something doesn’t work out played a major part in my success. One of the things that I’ve learned is to use your resources. Remember the goal is to work smarter not harder. I have recently launched my first Kids Hair Line called Sweet Maziahs. This hair line is safe for both kids and adults. I came up with the idea of starting my own line because I would have clients coming in asking for recommendations on what to use in their child’s hair. This would always be hard for me to answer because what works on one person may not work for someone else. I knew that if I made my own products, I would know exactly what’s in it and how it could benefit my clients. I plan to expand my line in the near future. In my spare time I enjoy visiting schools to educate students on the importance of taking care of their natural hair.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting the area, I would definitely take them to some amazing soul food restaurants such as A Touch of Skillz and Tasty Soul food and Bar. The customer service is always good and the food is awesome. I couldn’t end the night without taking them to Gather of Greenville. A place where you can enjoy food, drinks, music and is also family friendly.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would first like to thank God, there would be no Young Tresses by Mavis without him. To my loving husband, Desmond Gentry, thank you for the countless hours you put in to make sure I have everything I need. My mom, Cynthia Bomar Johnson, thank you for just being that support whenever you are needed. Last but not least, my business buddies/friends, Lawanda Robinson, Lakista Gilliam, Mamacita Thomas, Tovazshia Evans, Shauneka Robinson, Alana Miller and Felicia Miller. Thank you all for the late night responses and honest opinions at all times. I pray that God blesses your business as much as you have blessed mine.
