We had the good fortune of connecting with Malachi Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Malachi, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Well I was originally born in Kansas but I moved to Compton,CA when I was 5 so I would say I’m from Compton. I grew up in the hood where I battled mental and physical abuse from my adopted parents. It wasn’t easy at all. I went through many dark times but for me to be alive I would say it made me better. I feel like it was a test from God to see how I could handle my situation and be able to thrive. As soon as I got the chance to leave that house when I turned 18 my life changed. I got to show how much I could do with the freedom of the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I been playing sports my whole life and started playing basketball when I was a sophomore and started to progress quickly. It was hard at first and still is but God blessed me to get a Division 2 offer to Western Oregon the last minute when I was thinking about quitting. I’m also an Actor and was given the chance to play myself in White Men Can’t Jump 2. It’s very difficult being an actor but it helps me show my hidden talents and lets me go outside of my comfort zone. I’m also a musical artist and I started a while back. My cousin, Imani Herring, and my close friend, Jaycinco, showed me how to do it. And I have been having fun ever since. My life has never been easy but I never let anything stop me. I want to be a master of many things. I’ve learned to never give up in the darkest times because you’re always close to your goal. I want the world to know that I’m a strong minded person that wants to help others while helping myself be a better person so that the world can be a better place.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well a food spot classic would be Louis Burgers in Compton. I used to love the food there and they have everything. Also there is a beach called Terrania that is really beautiful. Once I went there, I could never stop going. Another good food spot is Raising Canes and their chicken sandwich is amazing. I also go thrifting a lot so I’m always up to do a little shopping.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well many people helped me out in my life but I would like to minimize it. First I would live to give a shoutout to Dr. Theresa Price, founder of the black college expo and NCRF foundation. She helped me focus and be the person I am today and never run from a challenge. Also I would live to give a shoutout to Cory Desant, founder of Elev8, and his wife April Desanti. They took me in when I left my foster home and pushed me hard to become a great there and person. Also to Valanitta Jingles, founder of success work academy, she was the for me in my darkest times. And to my brother Anthony Scott for always being my role model and never giving up on me.
