We had the good fortune of connecting with Lyn Marler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Lyn is an emerging artist currently based in Charleston, SC, where she has resided since moving from Greenville, South Carolina at the age of 18. During a period of introspection and soul-searching, Lyn found solace in spending time outdoors, frequently visiting the Charleston Battery and Folly Beach. Accompanied by her sketchbook, watercolors, and pen, she captured the beauty of her surroundings through her artistic expressions. It was during this time that Lyn’s works began to attract attention due to her skillful use of vibrant, eye-catching watercolors. Tourists, in particular, were drawn to her creations, often leaving with a smile on their faces. Inquiries about her artist status eventually prompted Lyn to embrace her natural talent and claim her title as an artist. Subsequently, she developed a deep passion for exploring a range of artistic media, including sculpting, oil painting, graphic design, and sewing.

Lyn invites you to explore her world of vibrant color, boundless imagination, and the limitless possibilities of daydreams brought to life. Her unwavering drive to create and inspire is palpable in every brushstroke, as she draws inspiration from the lush landscapes, architecture, and wildlife of Charleston. At the age of 21, Lyn has established two ventures, namely Lyn Darlings, her art business, and Lynen, her line of wallpaper and textiles. Her artistic style is a reflection of her multifaceted personality, with her oil paintings exuding a youthful, childlike quality that celebrates her innocent and optimistic mind. Conversely, her wallpaper line showcases a more feminine and romantic side. In addition to her flights of fancy, Lyn’s art also reflects the struggles she has overcome in her life, a testament to her resilience and inner strength.
Throughout Lyn’s body of work, the lotus flower serves as a recurring symbol, embodying the idea of being stuck in one’s circumstances and the self-awareness needed to break free. Her oil painting titled “Sleep Paralysis” features this flower, showcasing its profound meaning. Lyn is currently expanding her creative pursuits by exploring the art of dressmaking, using her textile designs to sew together dresses. Her most proud creation, the Farmers Market Dress, drew inspiration from the Charleston Farmers Market in Marion Square. Lyn infused the dress with bold, vibrant patterns that celebrate her Caribbean heritage, while also keeping in mind the sweltering Charleston heat by designing an open back for maximum comfort during the summer months. Through her clothing designs, Lyn aims to bring more joy and happiness to the people who wear them. Her passion for inspiring others is not limited to her fashion creations; Lyn hopes to share her art with the world and encourage others to pursue their passions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Over the past two years of managing her business, Lyn has primarily operated from the comfort of her home, crafting her products in her bedroom. There have been numerous occasions when she felt disheartened and isolated. However, recently, Lyn made the decision to engage in networking and actively put herself out there. A significant portion of her achievements can be attributed to the Charleston community. Lyn is incredibly fortunate to live in a city surrounded by an abundance of so many creative and authentic individuals. She finds constant inspiration in the network of people she’s encountered, and many have gone out of their way to offer encouragement and connect her with individuals who can help advance her career. From an external perspective, people may have viewed Lyn as successful, but it’s only now that she truly senses the success and impact she’s had on her journey – a very exhilarating realization.
