We had the good fortune of connecting with Lydia Hadley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lydia, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
A surprising thing I have learned is that the business of photography is mostly about developing a strong connection with your client . It’s not just pictures you’re taking it’s a moment in time you’re capturing whether it’s someones artistic expression, their life’s work or people choosing to spend the rest of their lives together

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My creative process starts with getting a clear mind. I like to focus on small details that are candid and almost not sure if they are going to happen like someone setting their drink down a certain way or steam coming off of food and catching the light just right. I think those can be difficult to see if you don’t have a clear mindset. My approach in photography is to assimilate myself into the atmosphere. Purely only looking for something beautiful. Starting out in this business was quite challenging and, also at the same time, exhilarating for me. I not only need to know the technical side of photography but I also need to understand and catch the vision of my clients and what they are trying to portray.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
With my home town being Charleston, SC, I have so many places I love. My favorites will forever be Xiao Bao Biscuit, Chico Feo, Babas/Goat.Sheep.Cow and, of course, Verns. I spend a lot of my time in parks when I can. The Battery, Demetre Park and Hampton Park are my go-to spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family has always been there for me and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. My best friend, Lizzie Crawford, who’s pushed me and supported me to keep going. My mentors, Lizzy Rollins and Madeleine Kobold, who have taught me all I know and gave me incredible opportunities and believed it me. I appreciate my past, present and future clients who trust me to capture their moment.
