We had the good fortune of connecting with Luke Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Luke, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I feel into the creative career because of my family and love for creating. I always thought that I was the only one in my family who didn’t have a gift in art, my father being an architect, sister being an artist, and mother being an interior designer, but when I was first given first given a camera from my father, 3 years ago, it felt right making work and expressing myself and ideas through the lens. From then on out, I used photography to show my creative ability and express how experiences made me feel. Whether its a sports event, view, or event with my friends, I feel that using my camera is a way to show how I felt in that moment, and what I saw.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For me, I think what sets me apart to get me to the point today and where I’ll be in the future is how real I am with what I want and how I can critique my own work. I constantly look at my work, critiquing any little bit or area that needs work. I will also spend so much time looking at others work and what I can take from them to put into my own work. That is one of the biggest lessons I have learned along the way, that everyone has something that you can learn from and add to your own work. The challenge for me was finding my own way and being true to myself of what I liked, and not what others wanted me to like. I would like the world to know that if you are true to yourself and able to figure out what you want in your work that you’ll thrive in creating and passion in your work. That is how I believe I will always be able to continue to grow and build on my own work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fort Mill, South Carolina is a medium sized town outside of Charlotte, NC. If I were to have a friend visit for the weekend I would definitely start it out by visiting the Tega Cay Deli for the best bagels in town, then proceed to visit the Anne Springs Greenway to go on a walk or doing something outdoorsy. One of the best things to do in Fort Mill is spend the day at Lake Wylie, either at a lakeside park or on a boat. As far as food goes, there are amazing spots near down town, as well as in Kingsley.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shoutout to the whole creatives community in general. everyone is so welcoming and helpful when it comes to work and opportunities. Specifically, I’d like to give credit to William Nguyen. Will and I have been side by side for our whole process and consistently are able to come to each other when looking for advice or a second opinion on something. I’d also like to give recognition to my parents who are so supportive when it comes to working and creating. They love what I do and that means a lot, and are constantly helping me out and giving me ideas and perspectives on things that I would not have been able to think of by myself.
