We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizz Luckhart Schleifer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lizz, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Having owned my own business for over 20 years, while also being a parent to 3 kiddos- work life balance is something that has taken me time to acheive. When I first started my business, I had 3 children under 4, and honestly, it was crazy. There was no balance, lol ! As my children got older, my business evolved, I went from work at home, to brick and mortar, to back to working from home. I have even taken breaks from work when I felt burnout coming on. I’ve learned that I needed to give myself grace- when I needed a break. It took me time to realize I would keep burning out if I didn’t; So here are a few things I’ve implemetd in my life to at least TRY and get some work life balance, 1) Set boudaries- this comes with answering phone calls, emails, text, even scheudling I don’t take in-person meetings on Fridays anymore- that has been a game changer for my mental health 2) Set priorities by making a to-do list everyday and look at that list and decide what is most important task and go from there 3) It’s OK to say “No” this includes even clients. If a job is not a good fit- its better to say no- then get yourself into a situation that you will regret 4) Schedule everything- establish a routine as much as you can- it will make you more effective in each task of the day. 5) Its ok to take time off! As hard as it is- you have to have rest or you will not be productive or focused at work! It’s an ever evloving method but this is what is helping me achieve the most balance I’ve had in years of owning my own small business!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
There are a million interior designers in Charleston, but what I have really dialed into, is knowing that I’m not the interior designer for everyone- and that is OK! I subscribe to the theory of “Dopamine Design”- every room you walk in to should make you happy! You can be led by trends, but the room should tell your story, reflect your personality!
Getting to this point has not been easy. There have been different versions of my design business through the years- but I have really dialed into what works best for me- and my clients.
What I want each of my clients to know is that I’m helping guide them in the design that works best for THEM- not anyone else. Do I want it “magazine worthy” sure- but the most important aspect is that the design it makes them HAPPY!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had someone visiting from out of town for the weekend- Day 1) I would grab a “Boat Tote” from Hamby’s Market for easy boat treats, take them on a boat cruise up the Ashley River & into the harbor to see the city from the water! Day 2) We would grab a croissant & coffee/tea from La Bonne Franquette, a gem in West Ashley , shop downtown on King, but also go off King to places like Taxidermy. That night hit The Peacock on East Bay- its such a verstile spot, we could eat downstairs then grab a table in the “lounge” and dance the night away! Day 3) Brunch at Blind Tiger- sneaky delicious brunch and awesome courtyard area- do a little day drinking at Little Palm, take a rickshaw to Muse on Society Street and sit at the bar with locals and grab some amazing Mediterean dinner!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give a Shoutout to Jennifer Buddin- she has been by my side for every season of my business- as a sounding board, always encouraging and promoting whatever I have going on at the time!
