We had the good fortune of connecting with Lizz Grimm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lizz, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After spending almost a decade in Education, my priorities changed after starting my own family. My son, Jackson, was born in late 2019 and the pandemic erupted a few months later. Teaching online and in person for two years was taxing while trying to juggle my responsibilities as a first-time mom (with a kiddo that was sick often) and as a wife. I gave my all 100% of the time to my students and their families, but felt as though I was only giving my family the leftovers of my time and energy. While I was pregnant with my second son, Luca, in 2022, I made the difficult decision to step down from my position and did not renew my contract for the following school year. My husband is a law partner with a local real estate firm and residential real estate was part of our daily conversations for the 5 years leading up to my decision to get my real estate license and begin my own endeavor in the real estate world! A dear friend and REALTOR of ours called me the day after I moved everything out of my classroom and said “I hear you left teaching. Are you ready to go into real estate?” It was the best decision I ever made to invest in myself and find my new identity, not just as Rob’s wife, Jackson and Luca’s mom, or Mrs. Grimm, the teacher…but as Lizz, your real estate bestie!

What should our readers know about your business?
I began taking on clients in January 2023 and landed my first four listings. I hit the ground running and leaned on my colleagues and husband for support and resources. I built my brand through networking, luncheons, showing up to company events, and my largest success…social media. I consider myself to be somewhat tech-savvy and it has served me well by putting back on my teaching hat and educating others within my brokerage. Social media presence has allowed me to become top of mind and land many personal referrals. Was it easy? Of course not – I had a newborn, but some of my most creative posts and Reels came while nursing him in the middle of the night. I would schedule posts to go live around 6 AM – when most are rolling over to grab their phones and scroll before they climb out of bed. My consistency and success in our industry has given me the opportunity to have a seat at tables I couldn’t have dreamed up for myself this early in my real estate career. Now, I can say with pride that I am at a place in my business where I have hired the best assistant and social media manager to help me grow my business further without giving away that personal touch I have with my clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would begin with a coffee at Drip! before wandering Main Street during the Soda City Market on Saturdays. I would then take them to Five Points for brunch at The Gourmet Shop. Can you say bacon and brie croissant? Delectable! Next, we’d head over to Revente, my favorite local designer consignment shop. We would shop the strip and check out the Five Points Plaza fountain. After changing into our new outfits for dinner, we would head to Hampton Street Vineyard or Di Vino Rosso. Either choice, you’ll leave with a fully belly and a smile! Downtown Columbia has so much to offer, from the arts scene to Riverbanks Zoo, to a sporting event cheering on the USC Gamecocks!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I truly believe in the saying, “It takes a village”. It was my tagline in every weekly email I sent during my time as a homeroom teacher and I believe it even more so now. My success today would not be possible without the support of my husband and number one fan, Robert, and my “why” – our kids! My family and friends have cheered me on since day one and it has motivated me further to not only take the plunge, but to slay every day! Once I began my journey in real estate, I quickly realized how incredibly fortunate I was to have a wonderful brokerage and franchise owner, ERA Wilder Realty, that sets themselves apart by having a family-like atmosphere, similar to my former school and administration.
