We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Nevin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lindsay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Lindsay Nevin started the Flyway Companies in 2008 after realizing there was an opportunity to fill a void in the Charleston market. Flyway is a vertically integrated real estate and construction firm focused on development, construction, property management, leasing and events. Our focus is geared towards placemaking and adaptive reuse across the Southeast with developments in Nashville, Savannah and the Lowcountry. Most notably, our newest mixed-use project The Refinery in Charleston, SC located at 1640 Meeting Street Rd. The mission of the development is to support and encourage community in the Upper Peninsula and to provide another foothold for Charleston’s often overlooked creative culture. Through placemaking efforts at The Refinery, the Flyway team creates experiences for people to share. From the revitalization efforts to on-site events, The Refinery aims to inspire people to see the potential in our City and to come together to make connections through art and music.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Refinery was a huge risk with many detractors, but the potential was there and the path of growth on the Peninsula was clear. Now The Refinery sits among a number of new projects and businesses who also saw the potential. Flyway continues to take risks, using The Refinery like a lab to curate new experiences – taking those risks keeps things interesting. 2023 was our first year operating as a concert venue, and we intend to push the boundaries on curation in 2024 – keep an eye on our line up and calendar of events. We hope people will begin to see us a place to host their off the wall ideas. We can’t say yes to everything because there are only so many days in a year, but we want to be known for taking calculated, thoughtful risks that continue to inspire people.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Charleston has a never ending list of things to do and places to check out! Leon’s is a classic and never disappoints. Bar George and Xiao Bao Biscuit are musts on a weekend itinerary. Getting out on the water would be on the top of the weekend to-do’s. Outside of concerts, The Refinery hosts other events, one can’t miss is the Charleston Vintage Market. It’s a great time walking around the campus and checking out the vendors, all while enjoying a beverage from The Whale.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout fittingly goes to our team at Flyway. We have the most incredible group of people that have been integral in cultivating a collaborative, close-knit environment, while staying authentic to our purpose.
