We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Tett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My creative side was apparent at a very young age, and it has always brought me the most happiness. I like to think I am sharing something I am passionate about with others, through my business.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have had my dessert business, Carb Coma, since 2011. I specialize in made to order sweet treats of both regular and special diet varieties (gluten free/ vegan/allergy free). I also now offer kids baking parties and pop up classes!
I moved to Charleston in the summer of 2021 from New Jersey and ultimately had to start over with my entire customer base. That left me with the ability to pivot my business and go more in the direction of what I have always wanted to do.
Luckily for me, Charleston is so small business and family friendly! I began including pop-up children’s baking classes and children’s baking parties as of October of 2023.
These classes and parties are for ages 4 and older. Generally, the age range is anywhere from 4-12 years old. I have had adults ask to do the baking parties for them as well, so maybe that can be my next addition!
I am so grateful to be able to teach kids an important life skill, while also putting big smiles on their faces (what kid doesn’t love sweets, right?!).
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So let’s say they land on Saturday morning … I would head to Folly and take them to Dead Low Coffee for their delish B.E.C. The post beach move would easily be my fav spot, Chico Feo! They have amazing tacos and cuban sandwiches and who doesn’t love an outdoor spot where you can roll up in your bathing suit…? Now, for the rest of the week: I am a big fan of Bar George in James Island and The Lost Isle in John’s Island. Both are super chill spots with tasty cocktails. If you’re looking for some unique selections of different food truck food, you have to check out Odyssey Bottle shop in James Island. You get the perfect mix of a chill wine bar, but can also sit outside in their back patio and indulge in whatever food truck food is there for the night (My favorite food truck is Black Out Burger… best smash burgers ever). I am a big advocate for supporting local businesses and brands so I would suggest we check out the Sunday Farmers Market at Pour House or Local Love CHS to grab some expertly curated local goodies.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to thank my Mom and Grandma for sparking my passion for cooking and baking at such an early age! Luckily, I continued to be curious about food and sweets (obviously!), which led me to experiment more in the kitchen as I grew up. My easy bake oven phase could only sustain me so long before I switched to real cook books and REAL ovens… Teaching kids how to bake reminds me of my childhood, and there’s nothing better than those happy, frosting filled smiles!
I also have to say that I am super grateful for the tight knit, small business community down here in Charleston. I am originally from NJ and I have never experienced so much genuine kindness and amazing networking opportunities, as I have here in the Low Country!
