We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Balance and choice are the ultimate decision making’s tools I often use when I am feeling over my head. Patience can be a struggle and I assume for others as well when waiting for the right outcome. Quitting is often marked as a negative attribute. Which can be a double edge sword too, right? Either I am going to quit to learn from my letdowns and stop wasting my valuable time and resources or not to quit, so I don’t look like a fool….and maybe things will work out? Sometimes you need to quit doing things so you can learn and grow from the mistakes that you have made, or not to quit to turn those mistakes into success and keep going forward with everything you have. But that’s the tricky part, isn’t it? Not knowing what will come of it. I believe that is where the beauty and excitement come in. That is what gives me hope and vigor. Not knowing what will come of it. The goosebumps on my skin appear and that weighted rush hits me. That is living. So maybe that is why I try not to give up. It’s the rush of life that keeps me going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Beachcombing. This is literally the foundation of my jewelry. I rely on the ocean to give me gifts that I can use and create magic with. I walk the beach as much as I can and it’s like treasure hunting. It gives me so much joy and peace. Not to mention the anticipation of finding something really cool that I can utilize for my jewelry! Coming from my hometown of Boston to the wonderful city of Charleston, I have to stay close the ocean. The ocean is the key to my success. That is why I make my jewelry, so people can take the ocean with them if they cannot be near it. The ocean has so much power and beauty that it gives me goosebumps. That is ultimately why I want people to wear my jewelry, you are placing the power and beauty of the ocean onto your body to feel that energy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The City of Charleston. What can you not like about it? The food, beaches, people, scenery, history, oh my! The beaches of Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island are a must first and foremost. Let’s get our tan on and listen to some beach vibes from the Windjammer. After, hitting up downtown Charlestown to suck down some salty oysters and southern fare is the topping on the cake! Walking down King and Market Street, there are so many delicious decisions to make! Fairs and festivals galore all summer and winter long, there is always something to do. That is why I play it by ear, when my friends and family come. Spontaneous decisions can be quite fun.!
