We had the good fortune of connecting with Kilo Kitty Buhrmaster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kilo Kitty, what’s your definition for success?
How I define success is my students. My success is their growth, their achievements, how they feel when they are in class, how they feel after leaving class. It’s their love of the aerial arts, their passion for constantly challenging their selves, their desire to perform, to compete, to become an instructor. My students will always be my success always and forever,

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I own and operate Sanctuary of Pole in Greenville SC. Sanctuary is a Pole and Aerial studio that offers classes at MOTIVE School of Movement on Webb Rd. Our classes range form dance to fitness including alternative styles. We offer merger base style classes such as LyraPole (Lyra and Pole), S-Pole (Silks/Sling and Pole) and FlyPole (aerial pole) These class types are great to bring pole and the other aerial arts together. Sanctuary began in January 2023 and our goal is to be a safe haven for all to come learn. We are the only pole studio in Greenville SC to offer pole series classes. Our series are a 4 week structured curriculum that meets for 1.5 hours one day a week. Our series includes 30 minute strength training/ conditioning segment follow by a hour of set combo that students build on through those weeks. Our series offers 8 mini series so that every mini series builds on to complete the full series. We have students progress in their pole journey. We offer drop-in classes which are known as open curriculum classes. New series opening up in January 2024.
If our students are interested in performing and/or competing; we are their to supports them. Our competitors have done a marvelous job in 2023 in a few pole competitions and coming home with placement medals.
Sanctuary of Pole is considered more of a pop up studio. It has its pros as well as its cons. We do not have a permanent brick and mortar building to call our own which makes it challenging with getting students in (as well as schedule) but that gives us the advantage to travel to other towns to pop up and give the opportunity for others to learn. For example, we offer pop ups at focus.upstate in Spartanburg SC. We usually try to pop up twice a month to give students an opportunity who can not make it to Greenville at MOTIVE School of Movement to join us.

A little background on me. I began pole in June of 2011 and haven’t looked back. I became pole certified in 2014 and began teaching; shortly after that in 2016/2017, I began performing and competing along the east coast. In 2022, I began to explore the aerial arts again and that gave me the fire to expand my knowledge (and get back into cross training), I started work on additional certifications in 2023. I have many on the verge of completion. So in late spring/ early summer, I completed my Lyra instructor certification.

I took everything that I learned over the years from personal experience, environment experience and my love and passion of the arts and teaching and taking these elements to bring a new experience for all at Sanctuary of Pole. In the past, would of I ever thought about opening a studio; no, not really. I never thoughted it would be possible. But life changes, people change, career paths change. My love and passion never truly changed, just the environment and I am so grateful to take what I love and share it with others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So all my crazy friends love the arts like I do, so we would be obviously poling at my studio, We would get together with M.Alice in Flight for some Lyra Love, Skyward Aerial Arts for Sling Saturday love and Aerial Ambitions for Silks Sunday love! Plus I would throw them into some awesome parkour classes at MOTIVE School of Movement. For chill time, go to downtown Greenville to Falls Park to walk and relax while drinking our coffees from Coffee Underground. Also go walk around at Swamp Rabbit Trail, Conestee Nature Reserve, Pretty Place, Paris Mountain State Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to say thank you to the local Aerial Art community in Greenville SC for all their love, support and friendship. Much love to Aerial Ambitions, M.Alice in Flight and Skyward Aerial Arts; they took my love of the arts and made it grow into what it is today. They push me to be a better student, better instructor and better version of me.
