We had the good fortune of connecting with Khadijah Torbert Abrams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Khadijah, can you tell us about a book that has had a meaningful impact on you?
I recently had the pleasure of reading “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” by Mark Manson, and I must say, it was a truly enlightening experience. This book challenges conventional wisdom about what it means to be happy and successful, pushing the reader to re-evaluate their priorities in a profound way.

One of the key takeaways for me was the concept of choosing what really matters and letting go of superficial concerns. Manson’s candid and often humorous approach helped me see that focusing on things beyond my control was draining my energy and happiness. By applying the principles from the book, I’ve learned to embrace my limitations and focus on my values, which has brought a greater sense of fulfillment to my life.

I appreciate how Manson uses personal anecdotes and psychological research to back his points, making the book not only relatable but also grounded in practical wisdom. His straightforward style is refreshing in a world that often prioritizes the trivial and the immediate over the meaningful and enduring.

Reading this book has been a transformative experience, providing me with a new perspective on how to live with authenticity and purpose. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to break free from societal expectations and cultivate a focused, value-driven life.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
“Made Worthy Journal Notebooks LLC” began not just as a business idea but as a personal revelation that grew from the pages of my own life story. Growing up in Opelika, I encountered bullying that made my school days incredibly tough. Those experiences could have dimmed my spirit, but instead, they led me to find refuge and voice in the pages of a diary. This practice of journaling, my secret sanctuary, allowed me to express my fears and hopes without judgment and was crucial in helping me navigate my emotions and maintain my inner strength.

The concept for “Made Worthy” crystallized years later, stemming from a profound moment in 2016. After a night of vivid dreams, I woke with a single word etched in my mind: “worthy.” This word, at first strange and unexpected, soon revealed itself as a divine push towards creating something meaningful. This inspiration led to the birth of “Made Worthy Journal Notebooks,” a product line that’s much more than just stationery—it’s a reminder to anyone who holds one that they possess inherent worth.

Launching “Made Worthy” was about bringing to life a line of journals that could offer the same comfort and space for self-expression that journaling provided me throughout my life. Each design, each piece of paper, was chosen not only for its quality but for its ability to resonate with those who might be struggling, celebrating, or simply reflecting on their daily lives. I chose June, my birth month, for the launch, symbolizing a new beginning—not just for me but for anyone who would find a part of their story in these journals.

The early success of “Made Worthy” exceeded all my expectations and affirmed my belief that now, more than ever, people need a private space for their thoughts and dreams. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, the importance of documenting our lives became even more apparent. It was a reminder from my mother that encouraged me to keep pushing forward: during times of uncertainty, having a safe space to express oneself is not just valuable—it’s vital.

My vision for “Made Worthy” is deeply connected to my personal journey and my work with young people in the community. As a mentor, I strive to be the supportive figure I longed for during my own challenging times. Each interaction, each moment of connection, reinforces the mission of “Made Worthy”: to empower and affirm the value of every individual. Our journals are titled with messages like “You’re Worthy,” “You Are Beautiful,” and “It Is Well” because these are the truths I want to echo in the hearts of everyone who uses them.

“Made Worthy” is my heart’s work, a reflection of my journey and a message I want to send into the world: no matter the circumstances, everyone is worthy of love, respect, and a chance to write their own story.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Greenville, South Carolina is a food lover’s paradise, with so many great spots to eat that it’s tough to pick just one favorite. Since moving here with my husband in late 2023, we’ve embraced the excitement of discovering new restaurants, bars, and diners all the time. I love how this city offers a little bit of everything—it’s one of the many reasons we’re thrilled to call Greenville our new home.
