We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelvin Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelvin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My career was all about risk taking. Taking the risk of betting on yourself and taking full responsibility for your effort & results. I also took the risk of quitting my teaching job to fully pursue fashion, modeling and being an author. It was a risk that I set my self up to take by saving. a certain amount of money then making the right moves to take that risk. The risk has paid off for me greatly.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am most proud of the platform and online community I have been about to establish. What started out as a hobby & outlet has grown into a place where men of all shapes and sizes from all the world go to for advice. Creating my blog (Notoriously Dapper) was the easy part but creating the content, writing and growing it was not easy it at all. Most of the challenges I had were trying to get my voice heard in an area where a lot black men especially bigger black men were not accepted. I had to create and post content exciting enough to get peoples attention. Doing this set me a part from other male fashion bloggers at the time, I was able to create accessible content that was relatable to men everywhere.

I want the world to know that my brand and my story is all about passion and faith. If you have a passion for something, you should put faith in it and execute the plan. Dreams don’t work unless you do. You must work for it, always remember hard work beats talent every time…especially when talent doesn’t work hard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start off the day by going to Drip coffee for a morning pick me up, then I would take them on a stroll on the riverwalk, after that we would have lunch at No Name Deli, pop over to the Columbia Art Museum, then explore five points and Devine street for some browsing & shopping.. We would take a rest for a few hours and get ready for a fun evening. The evening would consists of dinner at Tacos Nayarit, then head over to Bar None in five points for a drink or two.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my parents Kelvin & Sharon Davis for raising me to have undeniable belief in who I am and what I am capable of. They have always told me I can do whatever I want to and they continue to share those same sentiments with me in my adulthood. I would also like to thank my daughters for pushing me to be a better man but simply being their father. This journey would not have been possible without them. My friends Adam, Jamal, Cooper & John for always being the type of men I want to have around me. They have built me up during times when I was down. My success is shared with all of these amazing people in my life.
