We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Lyon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what inspires you?
Admittedly, I didn’t have an immediate answer for this and it took a bit of self-reflection to realize what truly inspires me. What I’ve decided is that I’m inspired by others, sometimes even strangers. I think people can be exceptionally interesting, and I’ve learned so much from just listening.
When I see others grow and change, or even remain steadfast in their ways, it gives me ideas and motivation for my own next big adventure. People have such unique stories and perspectives that tend to motivate me in unexpected ways. Each person’s journey, whether it’s overcoming challenges, achieving goals, or simply living their everyday life, offers a wealth of inspiration.
By observing and listening to these stories, I gain new insights and perspectives that help me navigate my own path. It’s fascinating how much we can learn from each other, and this continuous exchange of experiences and wisdom is what truly drives me forward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My music is a reflection of my journey and the stories I encounter along the way. I draw inspiration from the people around me, their experiences, and the emotions they evoke. My work often explores themes of growth, resilience, and the beauty of everyday moments. I strive to create pieces that resonate on a personal level, inviting listeners to see a part of their own story in my music.
What might set me apart is my deep connection to the human experience. I believe that every person has a unique story to tell, and I aim to capture that essence in my work. My music is not just about sound; it’s about creating a dialogue and fostering a sense of empathy, understanding, and emotion.
I overcame challenges by staying true to my vision and being open to learning and growth. I sought feedback, embraced constructive criticism, and never stopped honing my craft. Surrounding myself with a supportive community of fellow musicians and mentors also played a crucial role. They provided guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging that helped me navigate time of doubt.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of perseverance and resilience. Success doesn’t come overnight, and it’s essential to stay committed to your goals even when the going gets tough. I’ve also learned the value of authenticity—staying true to myself and my musical voice has been key to creating meaningful work.
I want the world to know that my music is a celebration of the human spirit. It’s about finding beauty in the ordinary and strength in vulnerability. My journey is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and the incredible support of those who believe in you. Through my music, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own stories and see the world through a lens of empathy and connection.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Day 1: First, we’d hit Folly Beach to soak up some sun and maybe sneak into a hotel pool or two (shh, don’t tell!). After a day of beach fun, we’d head to Chico Feo to hang out with all my favorite Charleston musicians and bartenders. The night wouldn’t be complete without a pit stop at Burt’s on the way home for some late-night snacks.
Day 2: The next day, we’d fuel up with some delicious grub from Baguette Magic and head downtown for a leisurely walk around the city. Of course, we’d need a caffeine boost from BLUM to keep us going. After a big morning, we’d take the boat out for a cruise to Sandy Point—nothing beats a day on the water! Later that evening, we’d catch a show on the deck at Charleston Pour House and enjoy some great live music.
Day 3: On the final day, we’d hit brunch at Miller’s All Day because you can’t leave Charleston without experiencing their food. To wrap up the trip, we’d head to my all-time favorite, the Terrace Theatre, for a movie.
Oh my goodness, and before I forget! We’d definitely grab some fresh oysters from somewhere delish.
There’s so much more to experience in this great city, but those are my go-tos!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As cheesy as it may sound, I owe a lot of my success to my amazing wife, Jessie. Her unwavering support and dedication have been crucial in my journey. Despite her own busy schedule, she always finds ways to support me.
It’s truly a gift to have someone in my life who cares so deeply about my success and happiness. I am immensely grateful for everything she does. Her belief in me and her willingness to go the extra mile make all the difference, and I couldn’t have achieved what I have without her by my side for the last 8 years.
