We had the good fortune of connecting with Karriema Calhoun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karriema, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Balance is impossible without boundaries – personal boundaries and business boundaries. And I learned this the hard way. When I initially launched my business, I was excited to be a small business owner, supporting clients to achieve their goals. I helped so many clients, but it wasn’t sustainable. I was working every day, taking on projects with short turnaround times, and if I’m honest, I took on more than I needed to. I had no days off, worked around the clock, and spent too much time “working in my business” instead of “working on my business.” Over time, my balance has changed because my boundaries have changed. This has been a significant improvement for me and my business. Now I have a good balance for business hours, client projects, rest, and business improvements.

What should our readers know about your business?

Copy by KC elevates professional brands through copywriting and resume writing. I redesign resumes and uplevel careers. 

The thing that sets me apart from others is I know the tools, have used the tools, and don’t mind sharing the tools to help clients achieve their goals. I’m most proud of the numerous success stories I receive from clients, and I’m excited that my clients’ total compensation has increased by over $2.3 million since 2020.

Was it easy getting to where I am today? Absolutely not, but it was so worth it. The growth I’ve experienced personally, professionally, and as a small business owner is extremely rewarding. And it’s an added bonus that I’ve witnessed so many clients elevate their brands and achieve their goals.

Because I’m a super ambitious millennial, I don’t give up easily. I’m driven to succeed and don’t shy away from challenges. Overcoming challenges is a requirement to being an entrepreneur. Having a good support system is important – supportive family, friends, mentors, fellow entrepreneurs, etc. To overcome challenges successfully, I had to know when to pause – whether it was to rest, get help, outsource, and the list goes on. Give yourself permission to ask for help. Take care of yourself. Invest in your business. Clarity and confidence are essential in growing your business. Those are just a few noteworthy lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I have some amazing friends who encouraged me to take this leap. They held me accountable and made sure I didn’t just talk about the business – they made sure I launched it too! My sorority sister Katera, singer and songwriter, helped me through many brainstorming sessions on how I wanted to launch the business. Sirena of The Aneris Collective was so encouraging and a great resource as I was getting started. I also want to shoutout Sierra, owner and author at Siohan Press; she’s my business accountability partner. Small business owners need support, and I’m thankful for these ladies. They’re my business besties, and I appreciate all the love and support from my family and friends. My largest lead generation is from client/family/friend referrals, so I also have to shoutout those who promote and advocate for my business. I appreciate you!
