We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Williamson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first envisioned launching my business, there weren’t many mobile businesses around. To start out, I wanted a store, but I didn’t want the really expensive overhead that came with it. I thought it would be pretty nice to be able to sell my products at different events and areas, so an online presence with a mobile store just made sense.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe what sets me apart is my bold and unapologetic approach to most things. I wasn’t always this way because I was worried about how I would be perceived. I started hand making jewelry during college when I couldn’t find a certain color I was looking for. When I wore what I created, I received many compliments and it turned into me making accessories for extra money. I’m currently putting the finishing touches on my mobile boutique and will be launching next month. For me, it is a dream come true. My children are now 19 and 17, so I now have the time to focus on something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time. It hasn’t been an easy feat, but I’m still here to make tomorrow and the next day better than the last. There has been many lessons learned along the way, but the one that I keep in the forefront is: Keep going. A little progress is better than no progress. My brand Street Chic, embodies what bold and unapologetic means to me. Women are to be seen and heard and Street Chic will make sure of it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a best friend visiting the area, I would definitely take my friend out to Edisto Beach. I grew up on Edisto and it is near and dear to my heart. I would also stop by Chanel’s Gullah Cuisine which is my sister’s food truck, for some great food. We would also make our way to Firefly distillery. It’s always a good time when I visit there. We definitely would take a scroll of downtown Charleston and visit the International African American Musuem. On the last full day, I would probably have a cookout with a huge pot of blue crabs in the back yard.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family and friends played a huge part in where I am today. All of them in their own little way pushed me into my destiny and I’m eternally grateful.
