We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlin Popow-mark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlin, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I believe taking risks is essential, especially when you’re aiming to reach new heights. For example, when I started Leave Your Mark Social (LYM), I had to make a big decision. After being laid off due to budget cuts at my corporate job, I faced two choices: apply for new corporate roles or take a leap and start LYM full-time.

I chose to start LYM, and it was both terrifying and incredibly rewarding. It meant giving up the security of a steady paycheck, benefits, and a clear career path. I had to rely on my skills and trust myself to build something from the ground up. The fear of failure was real, but so was the excitement of creating something that aligned with my passions.

In the beginning, there were moments of doubt. I had to juggle many roles—marketer, accountant, strategist, and designer—all with limited resources. But I quickly learned that taking risks forces you to grow. It makes you more creative, resilient, and adaptable.

As LYM grew, I saw the payoff from those early risks. I wasn’t just building a successful business—I was creating opportunities for others, working with amazing brands, and shaping my career on my own terms. That leap of faith taught me that growth and success come from stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the unknown.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From my very first unpaid college internship, I was eager to jump into the workforce. I quickly discovered my passion for creativity and diving headfirst into projects, even if I didn’t always know the exact path forward. The work ethic I developed in those early roles shaped who I am today and played a huge part in helping me build and run my own company. I’m not afraid to try new things or think outside the box to achieve the best possible results.

Growing my professional career wasn’t without its challenges. There were moments of doubt and hard days, especially when I first launched Leave Your Mark Social. I had to rely on my belief in myself and my abilities, even when the end goal felt distant. I’m proud of how I pushed through those tough times, maintaining a mindset that failure wasn’t an option. My livelihood depended on the success of my business, and I wasn’t willing to settle for anything less than my best.

Along the way, I’ve learned that it’s okay not to have all the answers. It’s okay to take a step back and refocus, as long as you come back with a clearer mind and bigger goals. I’m constantly striving to improve and surpass my previous successes.

I want the world to know that Leave Your Mark Social is not like other digital marketing agencies. I’ve built a company I’m proud of, offering services that I believe in. I wouldn’t offer my clients anything less than the absolute best.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Having my best friend in town for a week? That’s a dream come true! I’d plan the perfect mix of exploring my favorite spots and enjoying quality time together.

First, we’d spend a day in Greenville, SC—one of my favorite places (we even got our puppy nearby!). I’d start by booking spa appointments at the Grand Bohemian Spa for some relaxing massages. Then we’d head to Southernside Brewing Co. for a delicious lunch and craft beer. Afterward, we’d take a leisurely walk along the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail, soaking in the fall colors. To top off the day, we’d freshen up and enjoy dinner with a view at Juniper’s rooftop.

Another day would be all about adventure at the Whitewater Center in Charlotte, NC. We’d dive into kayaking and rafting, exploring everything the center has to offer. After a day of outdoor fun, we’d unwind with a late lunch and a beer at River’s Edge before heading home to relax.

For a city day, we’d explore some of my favorite spots around Charlotte. Starting in Southend at Sycamore, we’d enjoy the local vibe before strolling along the Rail Trail for some window shopping. Afterward, we’d stop by Hoppin’ for live music and a lively atmosphere. The day would end with a girls’ night out at Merchant and Trade’s rooftop, enjoying great drinks and an incredible view of the Queen City.

Perfect week, right?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a huge shoutout to my husband. From the moment I decided to take the leap and start Leave Your Mark Social, he’s been my biggest supporter, believing in me every step of the way. He didn’t worry about the pay cut or the loss of security—he knew I’d do whatever it took to succeed.

Being a business owner comes with long days and late nights. My husband has always been there, whether I’m working late or bringing my laptop on vacation. He understands the bigger picture and trusts in my abilities. Plus, he’s the best sounding board and I could ask for, whether he’s truly listening or not. (:
