We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Deckman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I decided that no matter what, I will always make art. I will always work on my creative process and seek professional art opportunities. Regardless of what my “success” might be or look like, I will continue to pursue my career.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a contemporary visual artist painting with a focus on color. My work has been featured in Luxe Interiors + Design, House & Garden UK, and Charleston Home & Design. I was named the 2019 Lowcountry Artist of the Year and have since exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in the South East. My original artwork can be collected through my representation partners: The Miller Gallery, The Gallery at Sweetgrass, and Docent. I also accept commissions on a rolling basis throughout the year, including onsite murals and hand painted wallpaper.
Creative careers are challenging, uncertain and largely unpredictable. I have learned that finding community has been incredibly helpful to both my professional and personal life. The creative community in Charleston is a special one, I feel super lucky and grateful to be a part of it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Charleston is an amazing city, the hype is true. I would schedule beach days out on Folly. We’d grab drinks and bites at Chico Feo, Bounty Bar and Lowlife. I’d recommend dinner reservations downtown at Vern’s and FIG. Happy hour wine on the patio at Bar Rollins, late night cocktails at Last Saint.
I’d recommend checking the show schedules at Charleston Music Hall and The Pour House. There’s also a monthly art-walk downtown, and regular shows at Redux Contemporary Art Center and Hed Hi Studio. The Gibbes Museum, The Aquarium, and The International African American Museum are all downtown and have excellent public programming.
There’s a thriving farmers and crafts markets hosted at various locations throughout the city. These events are a great place to support small, local and creative business. Redux Art Center would be the perfect place to ask for more info!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
