We had the good fortune of connecting with John Weber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi John, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been in the real estate business for 37 years. I would say most of that time I spent in “Developer sales”. We developed large tracks of land that included golf courses and other amentias. I managed sales team sometimes as large as 24 agents. Our job was simple. SELL everyone who came in the door a lot or a home.
It was during this time that I learned incredible sales and marketing skills. We were so good; it was almost like we could make a sale anytime we wanted. The sales skills we developed were unbelievable. There was one big problem. The developers were brutal narcist’s. I was fired on multiple occasions, mostly for making too much money.
With that background, I had to constantly read positive sales books and motivational audio books. I preached this everyday to the sales teams I managed. Sales can be very negative with clients telling you “NO” every day. A real professional will rise above the small setbacks with their eye on the prize.
I survived the 2008 real estate crash. At the time I was managing the Ritz Carlton Residences in the Caribbean. We were financed by Lehmen Brothers. Lehmen Brothers was the largest bankruptcy in United States history. It was a pretty rude set back. One minute I am jetting around the Caribbean and the next, I am out of a job with no chance to get a job. I lived in Florida at the time, which was ground zero for the crash.
Each and everyday I would go workout with my headsets playing motivational music and positive books. Just put your head down and push through.
In 2009 the police called and told me our 19 -ear son had been killed. This was all on top of the fact that I could not get a job. Funds were low! The devastation was unreal.
It takes great discipline to overcome an unjust world. Bad things happen to good people. I slowly clawed my way back into life. One step at a time. First, I moved to Georgia and ran a luxury development. It turned out the person running the property was dishonest. I left and moved to a resort in West Virginia. I continued to workout and listen to positive audio books. Finally, we decided to move back to Hilton Head Island, where we lived at one time.
I decided to get into the “general brokerage” real estate business. This way I could have my own hours and sell real estate anywhere in the area. Funds were low and I knew no one. Going through the ordeal we just went through made us very tough. We felt we could do anything.
The ONLY way out was to create a YouTube Channel. No agents were really do videos in 2017, so I decided to start making videos. At that point I just didn’t care what people thought. I just pushed through with every effort I had in my body. I made a video each week for 7 years. Today I have over 6,300 subscribers and over 1,000,000 views. My channel is the gold standard for Realtor’s who have a YouTube Channel in the Lowcountry of South Carolina.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Because of the success of YouTube, I created a team of 5 real estate agents to help serve all of the clients that contacted us during that time. We were voted the best real estate team in the Lowcountry in 2023. We think we have a good chance at winning again in 2024.
During the past 6-7 years would hire different agents to be on my team. It became obvious that the agents with no will power, and a lack of motivation did not want to work hard. If you do not have the drive to succeed and work hard, you will not make it.
I am starting a new online course for real estate agents this fall. Chasing Greatness! How to overcome your fears and succeed in a business that is very tough.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hudsons and Benny’s on Hilton Head Island are great places to see the water and dine.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I pretty much everything by myself. My wife was my biggest supporter. What I was doing was very rae and people looked at me like I was crazy with the YouTube Videos
