Hi Joanna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Tax preparation began for me as more than just a passing interest—it was a hobby that naturally transformed into a professional calling. Even before I formalized my role in the industry, I was the go-to person for friends and family, assisting them in preparing their taxes and explaining the complexities involved. Building on this foundation, I seized an opportunity with a local tax company to deepen my knowledge, gain hands-on experience, and broaden my horizons within the industry. My deep-rooted confidence in my skills empowered me to establish myself as a trusted expert in the tax industry. However, as I explored deeper into the profession, I identified a significant gap: there was a demand for tax services that prioritized not just accuracy but also customer service, education, transparency, and trust. This revelation aligned perfectly with my personal values, driving me to elevate industry standards and champion unmatched service quality. My vision extended beyond just providing superior tax services; I saw an opportunity to bring about financial empowerment and freedom for both myself and the community I serve.

What distinguishes us in the saturated market of tax services is our emphasis on transparency and customer experience. While many view tax preparation as a once-a-year transaction, we see it as a year-round relationship. We’re not just here to input numbers but to guide our clients through the complexities of taxation, helping them understand and make informed decisions for their families.

The aspect of my business that fills me with immense pride is our client retention rate. Many of our clients have been with us since our doors first opened, and their loyalty speaks volumes about our service quality.
My journey to establishing New Horizon Tax and Financial Services wasn’t without its trials. In the beginning, competing with established firms felt overwhelming, it felt like trying to break into a market controlled by industry heavyweights. However, we realized that instead of competing on volume, we’d compete on value. Personalized service, year-round availability, and continuous education are what sets us apart.

There were many challenges, from keeping up with the ever-evolving tax laws and codes to managing the high expectations of anxious clients. Overcoming them required two things: continuous learning and a commitment to our vision.

One of the critical lessons learned is that in the tax business, trust is everything. It’s not only about getting the numbers right; it’s about building relationships, being available, and staying committed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends came to visit, I’d ensure they experience the best of my city. We’d kick off with lunch at GatherGVL, an open-air food court boasting a diverse range of vendors. A pampering session would follow with rejuvenating facials at VLove Studio Suites. Come evening, we’d head to Halls Chop House in downtown Greenville, indulging in their delectable dishes and sipping on their famed lemon drops. And of course, a tour of downtown is a must – taking in all its scenic beauty and vibrant offerings. It would be a day to remember, showcasing the gems of the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly, if I tried to mention every individual who has impacted who I am today and the success of my business, the list would be never-ending. First and foremost, I want to thank God for granting me the strength and perseverance to continue this path of entrepreneurship. My children, the driving force and true inspiration behind my business, their presence lights up every challenge and triumph. My tight-knit group of friends and family who have stood by me unwaveringly, listening to my ups and downs, and consistently offering their support. I’m also profoundly thankful to my peers and other tax professionals in the industry. Their spirit of collaboration and consistent choice of support over competition has been invaluable. Last but not least I must express my deepest gratitude to my clients. Without them, I wouldn’t have the privilege of continuing my passion for tax preparation and being able to serve them and the community.
