We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always had a love/passion for doing hair as a young child. In my early 20’s I had a young child to care for. It wasn’t hard to find a job but it was hard to keep my interest in the job. So I found myself going from job to job. One day I thought to myself “girl you love doing hair and people will pay you!” That was in 2014, I haven’t applied for a job since!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was blessed with the art of cosmetology as a young girl. Doing my family and friend’s hair in middle & high school is what started me off. Along my journey I have become licensed & extremely skilled. I took the steps needed to become a professional cosmetologist at a young age and just continued to grow!
Perfecting my craft has always been most important to me! But like most things in life getting to where I’m at today was extremely challenging. I overcame many obstacles. From finding professional environments to work in. To having my own salon that I lose due to a fire. It was a very difficult time and almost discouraged me, But with Gods grace I prevail! Almost 2 decades of my life have been dedicated to becoming the best cosmetologist I could be. I have learned so many things professionally and personally. Learning to adapt to new environments, learning new communication skills so I could service new clients. Remaining consistent so I could keep my valued clients.
Ms. Jones Slay is my brand and I would like the world to know that as long as you preserve and trust in God you can overcome all obstacles in life!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love fine dining when I do get the opportunity to step out. I would first take my friend downtown to Halls Chophouse. I love their food and atmosphere!
We would then go on main street and get a stroll in. I would stop by The Grand for some drinks and maybe game of bowling.
I truly believe the downtown area of Columbia has the most interesting things to do. In that area you can meet the most interesting people that really know how to have a good time!

The remainder of the week I would plan different things for my friend. We could try Soda City on a Saturday morning. One day out of the week we could catch a matinee movie. I would also treat my friend to a good spa day including massages, manicures and pedicures.
My favorite nail salon is in the Harbison area of S.C. called “Hollywood Nails & Spa”.

Columbia most certainly has a wide variety of places to go and attractions for entertainment. You just have to know which days and times to go.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to first give a shoutout to GOD! He blessed me with these hands! Secondly to my mom she had been a wonderful support system! Also I would like to shoutout Chelsea Henry (hair school instructor/owner) and Joy McLaughlin-Harris for accepting me into the industry and always encouraging me! Also I would like to shoutout all my supporters throughout my journey they really make this possible!
