We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Harrington MPH and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
I love working for myself, but I would say the most important decision I made that contributed to my success was hiring help. As an entrepreneur there are a lot of moving parts, there is always something to do. As a human you quite literally cannot do it all, and you do not have too. When I hired my employees, I was able to free up time and work on bigger projects. I think we get scared we cannot afford employees, we overlook that people want to help. There are people you could hire for per diem work or part time. Find that one thing you need for your business that you do not like doing or honestly not good at. Hire someone for that task. This will help you grow faster, more than you may realize.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a Public Health Educator that focuses on stress management and burnout prevention. I started my career in the Drug and Alcohol field. I worked there for a few years and wanted to be on the prevention side of things. I went back to school and got my Masters in Public Health. In grad school is where I learned about being an entrepreneur and creating your own programs.
From there I started my business called Journey To Yourself, where I help you decrease your stress by increasing your self awareness. I do this with one-on-one client work and through speaking engagements.
What gets me the most excited about my business is my clients’ growth and making relationships. It can be hard to understand the life of an entrepreneur, creating those healthy business friendships is key. These business relationships helped me learn a lot about running a business. With all my mentors I was able to avoid some struggles, because they have been there. I was also able to reach out to them when I felt lost or confused. On paper, I have quite a few failures, but honestly I have learned so much because of all the “failures”. The best part is when I am learning and growing it only helps me improve what I am doing for my clients and my team.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends and I get together it is always one of two things, brunch or sushi. Saying this out loud, makes me realize I have become more of a homebody. When my friends and I get together, I usually host the brunch. I love cooking for others and making fun cocktails. For long weekends, my friends and I have visited or met half way at an AirBNB and become tourists in other towns. A typical weekend is a group of us going camping – tent camping. My fiancé and I love hosting, so our campsite is usually the main hang out spot. Chris actually proposed to me when I thought we were just having our normal camping with friends and family.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are a few people right off the bat I have to make time to recognize. My team needs the loudest shout out. They put their heart and souls into their work and it really shows. They are honest with their feedback and only want the business to succeed. They bring me back to reality, when I come up with more ideas! They have taught me to practice what we preach everyday.
Joclyn has been on the team since literally day one. I called and said “Want to take an adventure with me?” Over the past years she has grown into not only more of a best friend, a leader on our team, but also a strong mom. She continues to grow everyday in our business and in life. Her growth inspires me to keep making moves for the business.
My fiancé Chris has been with me since the day of starting my business. He is the one packing up the car and unloading. He is the one behind the scenes reminding me why I started this business in the first place. He never lets me give up on me.
My business bestie Jaclyn, she is a true rock. Jaclyn is a success on her own from being a speaker, coach and author. She never holds back on her advice. Jaclyn has the perfect balance of being nurturing and stern. Our conversations always end with laughing.
I am truly blessed and recognize that my business would not be where it is without everyone listed above, family and friends that turned into family. I have friends and family that I can call to talk out my thoughts. I have friends that have helped me come up with the name of my business and design my logo. I have friends and families that attend all my events or even work “volunteer” at my events. If you gave a book to write on this subject, I would have time to give a shout out to also my aunt in-law ~ Aunt Leen, my best friend of my Nathalie and so many more.
My shoutout is humbling, as an entrepreneur it can get lonely. When you have the opportunity to write this out, you realize you are not alone.
