We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Cattles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As cliche as it sounds, becoming a mom changed my entire view on what I wanted from a career. I was working 50+ hours a week in the auto business making great money, but MISERABLE before my son was born. After that I knew I had to make a change.

I craved something that would allow me the freedom to be there for all of the special moments of my kids childhood. I also wanted something I was passionate about. Photography was something that I had always done for friends and family on the side over the years which my decision to start JCP (Jess Cattles Photography) full time.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is something that reflects what I always wanted with my own family photos. I dreamed of something timeless and bright that truly captures the pure joy one feels during those special years for your growing family.

I wanted to create art that would always be beautiful even as styles and trends change over the years.

JCP travels to homes for newborn sessions but is also excited to be offering studio newborn sessions in my own studio space soon. The space I have been planning has changed and evolved and I cannot wait to be able to offer even more services to my clients.

As any business owner, especially a creative it can sometimes be difficult not to compare your work and your journey to others. I simply try to be myself and I think that this is reflected in the images I create. Every family and story is different and I think how you capture and represent that needs to mirror those differences.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We have now been in the area for almost three years and I am still finding new places and areas I love to explore.

If I had a friend from out of town I would love to start by taking them for to Soda City Market to browse booths and local vendors in the morning, grabbing a coffee, and fresh flowers from the market. After, I’d take them to The Gourmet Shop for brunch. For my friends with little ones, or expecting I always take them to Marigold Modern & Duck Duck Goose on Devine Street for all the gorgeous kids outfits and accessories. To wrap up the afternoon, I would take them antique shopping around Columbia: Old Mill Antique Mall is a great place to find unique treasures. Finally, I would take them to Mr. Friendly’s for dinner. The food is AMAZING, the menu is filled with ever-changing options.

I always take my out of town visitors all over the city as well as over to see a few of the historic surrounding cities including Camden, which has an adorable downtown filled with local shops and places to eat. We also usually make a day trip to one of our favorite beaches. I think that is the wonderful part about this beautiful area we live, is that there are so many options of additional activities just a short drive away as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to get to thank all of the local creatives that I have met over the years who have mentored and and aided me in learning and growing this little business of mine. Especially moving to South Carolina from out of state. The community of photographers here has been so supportive and welcoming to the area.

The last person I’d love to thank is my husband, Rowdy. He has done everything he can to help make my dream a reality . I wouldn’t have been brave enough to start without his support.
