We had the good fortune of connecting with Jern Yoong Toh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jern Yoong, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is being genuine and being hardworking. In this creative industry, there are so many creatives however each creative has almost overlapping circles. The best way I discovered that has contribute to my success in this industry is the power of being genuine and kind to others. You never know a simple dm or text can send you a long way in this industry.
And not just establishing a relationship, but being a person of high character and being willing to help others and avail yourself to the task at hand. Showing others that you work hard and a person of high character will not just open the door to relationships for you, but it will help people want to be around you instead of just a person who is known to take away from others.
Ultimately, my success stems from listening to others and being available for them and the task at hand.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a creative project manager for Gamecock Football, I am blessed to be able to take lead on video projects on social media, recruiting and in-venue video pieces as tasked by our associate AD for Football creative media, Justin King.
What sets me apart from others would primarily be my work ethic and believe in my abilities. When I was younger, my parents gave me an English name (Ernest) which they want for it to stand for earnestly doing the right thing. Taking the extra mile and doing things excellently. So taking pride in my name contributed a lot to where I am right now. ON top of that, being a sports creative is no easy job either, let alone being a project manager having to manage multiple projects at once over a period of time.
This is where I go on to say about what I am proud of and what keeps me going in this role at Gamecock Athletics. The staff, the community and the interns. They are the ones that give me motivation be it directly or indirectly to work my hardest and deliver an experience for them. Whether it’s taking a load of my supervisor, or guiding young interns in our creative program or delivering an awesome experience to fans and the community during game days, these are the relationships that I am most excited about.
Where I got to today can be credited to the amazing people in my life. They motivated me, guided me as well as inspired me along the way to be who I am as a creative. Yes, the process was challenging, finding a new job after graduating from grad school in May 2024 was not easy, but because of those relationships, it helped me land a job with the football team at the University of South Carolina.
One of the biggest lessons I would say that I have learned along the way would be to let actions speak louder than words or ego. Empty words and ego are one of the biggest killers in all industries today. This spills into losing relationships, losing trust and ultimately losing who you are as a person chasing the wrong thing. I always learned to keep the focus on the goal and work your hardest to get it, not forgetting the ones that are alongside you and the ones that helped you from the start.
I want the world to know that it is possible for people to chase their dreams, only when you realize that the dreams that you want to chase will also involve the people that will help you along the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Would definitely have them in the city for a while to check out the stores and the city life. Soda city is awesome to visit during the weekends with the shops and local businesses! There are many awesome restaurants such as Cantina 76, Thirsty Fellow and many more diverse restaurants to check out when you’re over here. There is also the museum of art here in Columbia to visit!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to the people that have touched me along the way in my creative journey. (Megan Carr, Drew Ferguson, Justin King, Eichel Davis, Zach Smith, Madison Olmo, Brooke Brown, Mark Womack, Scott Huck, Jim Clark, Campbell University Creative Staff and GamecockFB Creative Staff.)
