We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Mullins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, how does your business help the community?
In a really technological time, where more people use their thumbs to commicate than their hands, a handlettered message connects in a personal, unique way. When I teach someone Handlettering skills in a class, I’m excited they can craft a card, sign, or gift for someone with a thoughtfully lettered message that makes them feel special because of the time & love & vulnerability that went into it. When I make a handlettered sign, logo, or mural, I’m hoping the viewers sense some personality and heart beyond what a machine could generate. In a world of screens that strive to capture our frenzied attention spans, I’d like to think a beautiful, unique, handmade message on the wall may capture someone’s hearts. I named my biz Sight to Behold because I believe we become what we behold, and I want to help other become the best, blessed version of themselves they can be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Graphic designing was a big part of my life, back to high school as the yearbook editor to working with a marketing & advertising company. I had no real formal training in graphic design though, so I was somewhat limited in opportunity without that on my resume. I’m thankful for opportunities, like at Boone Hall Plantation & Farms, to use my artistic skills to create by hand. There I was able to paint giant scale signs, scenic backdrops, and fun, interactive spaces. Sometimes a 4×8 ft sheet of plywood or plastic was one LETTER of a sign. Or a used billboard vinyl was an imaginative backdrop I spraypainted everything from pyramids, pirates, to planets onto. My “office” was all outside in 100°+ Charleston summer humidity, bugs, and rain, but I got to create by hand new things all the time. It helped me see the value in handpainted creativity for businesses, and honestly for me. I needed the outlet of creativity and I figured others did too. That started my journey into marketing my Handlettering skills for signs, murals, and teaching others too.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Depending on the person, if they were visiting Charleston for the first time they’d need to visit Sullivan’s Island Beach, Boone Hall and/or Middleton, and King Street along with strolling/biking a bunch of other streets downtown. We’d need to eat at Grit counter, Lewis BBQ, Pages, and a HOST of other places because there are too many yummy places to eat in Chas. This would still only scratch the surface, so they’d need to visit again!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Laura Bowers, who was one of the first to let me paint on alllll the things for years as an artist at Boone Hall Plantation.
