We had the good fortune of connecting with James and Khadijah Dawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James and Khadijah, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This is a question that many of our clients often seek an answer to. In order to answer this question, one must first determine the value of the subject matter. What does the subject mean to you and what value does it hold? Once you determine the value, then, your answer will be simple. Let’s reframe the question for a moment. What are you willing to hold on to and fight for and what are you willing to let go of? You must first decipher what you really want; what is the ultimate goal concerning the subject? Then, decide rather what you’re doing actually aligns with the ultimate goal or not. If it does, get a grasp of whether or not you’re willing to experience failure in order to get to the goal. If you’re not willing to experience the possibility of failure, ask yourself if you are willing to let go of the subject matter. Most likely, if you’re not willing to fail so that you can keep trying until you reach success, you’re willing to let it go. This further identifies the value of the subject matter. If you’re willing to let it go, the subject doesn’t offer as much value to you as you thought. Perhaps the subject doesn’t really align with the core values and beliefs that you have chosen for the current moment of your life. Ultimately, if you feel the subject adds value to your life, either in the future or the present moment, keep going. If you no longer see the value in the subject, and you’re willing to let it go, perhaps it’s time to give it up.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Essential Element Healing Arts is dedicated to providing intuitive wellness to enhance the quality of life for our clientele. We utilize modalities such as energy, sound, and vibration healing as well as Akashic Records consultations. In addition, we have unique products to assist in the healing process such as hand-crafted crystal jewelry, sage bundles, and intention candles.

What sets us apart from others is that we work as a unit, not just as a husband and wife team, but also with the client and their spiritual team. We are most proud of the fact that we have been able to follow our life’s purpose and help others realize their potential to truly heal.

Initially, we became healing practitioners in an effort to heal our own ailments that were not successfully being treated with western medicine. Energy healing helped us create better alignment, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. We were finally able to pinpoint the root causes of our issues and implement practices for success. While we are still on our healing journey, we are in full alignment with our path to healing. Once we realized how much healing with energy and frequency had enhanced our quality of life, we created Essential Element Healing Arts to share the experience with others.

The path was not easy. Overcoming the challenge of healing past traumas can be a grueling and difficult journey. We truly had to trust the process and focus on the light at the end of the tunnel. The key to pushing through was understanding that the endurance of trauma was simply the foundation for transformation. The biggest lesson we learned along the way is that if you want transformation, you have to be willing to transform. You can’t expect change to come without working to make things change.

Essential Element is a safe space for all, including the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. We truly find joy in helping you realize your full potential to heal. Please know that you are the Essential Element in your healing process. No one else can truly heal you. We hold the energy for you but the true healing starts from deep within.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday, we’re going to hang out at Sidewall Pizza on Pelham Road, then venture to Regal Hollywood 20 movie theater on Woodruff Road for the Monday Mystery Movie.

Tuesday, we’re going to have breakfast at First Watch on Woodruff Road and shop a little bit at the Shoppes at Greenridge. Then, we’ll head downtown to McPherson Park for a round of mini golf.

Wednesday, we’re going to spend the morning finding our new favorite books and enjoying Starbucks Coffee at Barnes and Noble on Haywood Road. Then, we will head across the street to Haywood Mall for a little shopping. Stopping by Sacred Chakra and the Greenville Gem Mines in the mall is a must! Next, we will have lunch and dessert at the Cheesecake Factory.

Thursday, we will enjoy a late afternoon picnic lunch at Falls Park on the Reedy and check out the Liberty Bridge. Then, we’ll catch the trolley over to Noma Square for Downtown Alive where we can often catch live jazz!

Friday, we’re headed to Dave and Busters on Woodruff Road for an all day excursion. Games and food galore! Then, we’ll make our way downtown for Main Street Fridays where we’ll enjoy great music and more good food.

Saturday, we’re going back downtown to the TD Saturday Market for fresh produce and unique finds. Then later that afternoon, we will be bowling at Spare Time on Congaree Road.

Sunday, we’ll check out a show at the Peace Center. Then, we’re heading to Coffee Underground for Open Mic Poetry Night!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to dedicate our shoutout to The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book is what really got us started on our journey to elevate the essence of the mind and body. We continue to incorporate the principles in our daily practice within our personal lives and the lives of our clients. The first agreement is to “be impeccable with your word.” This agreement really taught us to speak with integrity and truth, encompassing the throat chakra. The second agreement is “don’t take things personally”. Ultimately, what others say and do is only a projection of their own reality and truly has nothing to do with you. This agreement really enabled us to heal past traumas and realize our own personal power, relative to both the root and solar plexus chakras. The third agreement is “don’t make assumptions”. In other words, listen, ask questions, and be understanding instead of projecting your reality onto others. This agreement encouraged us to see past our own reality and embrace real connection with ourselves and others, fully comprising the heart chakra. The fourth agreement is to “always do your best”. Your best will change from moment to moment. Nonetheless, as long as you are doing the absolute best you can in that moment, you eliminate suffering from guilt, doubt, and self-judgment. This agreement helped us take back our power and begin to create with confidence, embodying the solar plexus and sacral chakras. Recognizing that our lives are simply determined by the agreements we have with ourselves and aligning those agreements with the first five chakras allowed for insight and wisdom to properly flow for us, making room for divine connection, ultimately balancing the third-eye and crown chakras. The Four Agreements has been life-changing for us and is a must read for anyone seeking to elevate their awareness.
